We had a great opportunity to send a quick email interview with our current obsession of the year(if you couldn’t tell) Young Galaxy. They’re currently on tour with Austra and are giving away the remixes they’ve done for bands such as Junior Boys, Austra, The Sounds, CFCF, and many more for free here. I suggest you download it and listen during the reading, some really great stuff here. They are rereleasing their epic ‘Shapeshifting’ album on December 13th, go get it if you haven’t yet!
Hi Guys! Such an honor to get to interview you as I’ve been incredibly obsessed with Shapeshifting for the past few months. First off can you introduce us to the band members and let us know which role they have in Young Galaxy?
Stephen Ramsay – guitar, keys, vox
Catherine McCandless – keys, vox
Stephen Kamp – bass, vox
Matt Shapiro – guitars, keys, vox
Andrea Silver – drums
What I really love about you guys is that your sound is very modern yet familiar. I hear an influence by progressive music from the 70′s and 80′s that has been incredibly overlooked by the media as important. Am I wrong in seeing this connection? What are some bands that you feel are under appreciated that deserve more love?
Why thank you. I think you’re absolutely right, but I’m kind of surprised when anyone picks up on it. For instance, we really love krautrock – bands like Neu, Can, Cluster, Ash Ra Tempel and Kraftwerk really opened our minds musically. Though they were lumped together because they were German bands, they were quite diverse musically. What ties it all together is a sense of experimentation that really appeals to me, but with Kraftwerk for instance, there was this incredible precision and attention to detail too. They heavily influenced people like Eno, Bowie and David Byrne, who are so influential today – it’s hard to call those guys under appreciated!
There are bands like Aphrodite’s Child, Vangelis’ first band, who were very heavy, largely unknown know and have this epic, progressive, almost mystical sound that also betrayed some great tunes (check out ‘The Four Horsemen’). Lately I’m loving the mutant disco and psychedelic dance music from the 70′s and 80′s. Arthur Russell, the 70′s/80′s avant-disco figurehead is currently a big influence on me. I tend to listen to a lot of music that pushes the envelop sonically from within the pop and dance format for inspiration.

So fresh, so new, so Jagwar Ma! Not much has been heard about this great new talent, but this video and this song has become an instant hit with me in the last few hours of hearing it. Has everything that I could ever hope for, and that 60′s hook is really ringing loud and clear. More! More! More!
Knightlife is ready to play swords with us with a new EP titled “I Want You”, due out on Monday. We are lucky enough to be able to give away the new single “Serves You Right”, which is a cocaine infused disco anthem. If this won’t get the keys rustling I don’t know what will. The Emperor Machine remix is phenomenal too, so get your hands on this!
It’s getting a release on Cut Copy label Cutters Records which is already on our top lists of go to labels for all the right reasons. Earlier this year they released the amazing future funk Nile Delta’s EP.
Set the mood and let the beats speak for themselves.
We just received an email with great new from Pearl Fiction! A new album is being released in a little over a month! We couldn’t be more excited. We don’t have many details yet but here is a video to the new single “Run”.
Smashing Pumpkins are rereleasing their catalog on vinyl, cd, and digital download, and I could’t be more excited. One of my favorite bands in my youth and the reason music became so important in my life. We are lucky enough to be giving away a copy of the newly reissued cd box set for Gish! SP shall forever be remembered as one of the best bands of the 90′s and can now be enjoyed in completion. I am incredible excited about Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness on vinyl as I have been too cheap to fork out the 500 dollars if I was lucky.
All you have to do is send me a comment on twitter telling my why Smashing Pumpkins is so special to you or @rchrd or @bigstereo on instagram with a picture of your favorite album. Winner will be announced Friday through whichever channel you used.
Winner is Sam from Olympia, Washington! Congratulations!

Real Estate just released their new album ‘Days’ and it is nothing less than heaven. You guys know we have a soft spot for melodic indie bedroom pop and this band makes all the right moves. Refer to Crayon Fields, Kings of Convenience, and The Association for a hint on what to expect. The cold is rolling in and Real Estate is the new Snuggie.

Pyyramids EP ‘Human Beings’ is here, and you can take a listen, buy, and even download one of the tracks free here, or down there! For fans of Kudu, Little Dragon, and bands of the ilk, Pyyramids is a keeper. A little rock and roll, a little new wave, and a little jazz will clear up any rainy day. Drea Smith’s cooing and whispery vocals get the blood flowing in all the right places and OK Go’s Tim Nordwind has all the right beats and adds texture that will warm anyone up. “Animal” has everything I could ever want, punk to the core. Can’t wait to hear more from this outfit.
All we are saying is give Pyyramids a chance.
I wrote about S.C.U.M. not that long ago, weeks even, but I just can’t get enough of their full length ‘Again Into Eyes’. One of the most impressive acts and one of the most spine tingling records to come out of my speakers this year. Those childish looks will deceive you, but those aged musician fingers will lure you in. It might be out there but I can hear a little Echo and the Bunnymen, Jesus and Mary Chain, and even Stone Roses in S.C.U.M..They will get your inner goth dancing, but the ethereal feedback and heart pounding drum beats will draw pictures of Kurt Cobain moshing in his grave alongside Ian Curtis. If this is what the 2010′s sound like, then count me in.
We are in the age of the public access music video and I don’t mind.
Figures is on full blast. For those fans of the Drive soundtrack(come on admit it, that’s all of you), comes one of the coolest surprises in instrumental music of the year. A perfect night ride, a drug binged sexy after party in vegas, a moment alone in a candle light room, or a deep sea submarine ride might be a good place to start with this soundtrack to your new and modern life. Make sure to buy their EP here.
Halloween isn’t over! Halloween isn’t over! Halloween isn’t over! Halloween isn’t over! Halloween isn’t over! Halloween isn’t over! Halloween isn’t over! Halloween isn’t over!
Not many words can express how much I am digging this band lately. I think by now you have noticed my obsession. They start tour on some dates with Austra, so jealous to those that can see them together. They’re skipping out on that down here, but make sure you don’t miss it.
Still playing ‘You Are All I See’ on repeat. One of the most beautiful albums of the year. Just recently released as a deluxe edition exclusively on iTunes, the album now has 4 new tracks, one of which is streaming down below. Currently on tour with M83, make sure to go see this epic combination.
P.S. Sorry guys, corrected the link to download the track for the previous post here.
BigStereo’s favorite band Metronomy has been remixed by Psychemagik and we have an exclusive download for you. “Everything Goes My Way” is one of my favorite tracks on the album and this remix really takes me back a few years, when we couldn’t get enough of the indie dance craze that was hitting the world by storm. Imagine Depeche Mode circa “Strange Love” going a bit Tropical and you get this gem.
Perfect Sunday tunes. Anika is the perfect cure for this hangover. If you haven’t heard her yet, it’s ok, cause I hadn’t either until just now. I’m not sure how things like this slip in the cracks. Bela Lugosi is not dead.

Have you heard of The Moor? Not yet?! Well you should take a listen. Their self titled album which was just released is a beautiful and layered experience that brings us back to days of Stereolab and Midnight Movies acid trips. As smooth as milk and as rich as honey this album will get you reaching for the blanket and some binoculars to stare at some clouds. Romance oozes out of the keys and the bass covers you and makes your heartbeat thump. The vocals sooth all of the harshness of this greedy world away and comfort you as if in fetal position.
Check out these two tracks and download them while you can, don’t forget to buy the album, this one is a keeper.
Definitely one of my favorite bands for the last few years. These guys are completely on point and sharp as a vampire’s tooth. They absolutely don’t stop to amaze us and are constantly working on something that just blows us away. Please don’t ever make this stop. Fuck heroin I have The Horrors.
