We Have Band

Gosh, if you’re a regular here then by now you know BIGSTEREO loves We Have Band — we’ve been following their every move since their formation. The good news is their debut album is finally being released on April 5th, and you can stream the entire thing for free right now on their MySpace!!

We Have Bands latest single is “Divisive” (we posted the video back here last month)… but the band is perhaps the most generous band and seem to be giving away the entire remix package. We’re going to be totally non-editorial and let you vote for the fav. It can be like American Idol but better because it’s We Have Band Idol.

Body Language + Alaska in Winter

music

Body Language + Alaska in Winter

Body Language’s cover/edit of Detroit Grand Pubah’s “Sandwiches” was one of the biggest aha moment of their debut EP “Speaks.” Body Language took a whacky pop song and created something relaxed and even understated. But the potential for something a bit more remained and Alaska in Winter ran with it — creating a remix that pays more homage to the original, but also keeps it very “now.” Let’s make sandwiches.

Baby Monster + Golden Bug

Today is the day for Baby Monster to officially hit iTunes with “She Comes Alive.” This also means you can finally pick up the b-side “Sudden Symphony” which is worthy of an a-side of its very own. To kick it all off we’re giving you the Golden Bug remix, which is included in the package as well. Synth ebbs and flows outta this remix:

Midnight Juggernauts

Today is a good day because we have a couple new Midnight Juggernauts remixes to share with you. First up is the b-side to the “This New Technology” single which is out on Acephale. Total clanky and haunted sounding… Baby Rainbow kinda scares me.

Kelis

music

She’s done it again. Her new album looks like it’s gonna make for some dance floor mayhem. I hope it’s not incredibly cheesy like her costumes in this video.

Monarchy

music

Monarchy may go down as the biggest teases ever — but they do know how to keep our attention from wavering and continue to do so with this quick preview of their new video for “The Phoenix Alive.” The video is shot by Dandelion & Burdock and looks to be animation/cgi heavy… Definitely plays off their already established limited imagery quite well.

Jetskiis

music

Jetskiis

I was about to write a post about Jetskiis being chillwave with cojones but decided it would be a disservice to Jetskiis to lump them in with chillwave. There’s a bit more going on here.

Jetskiis is a new band out of San Francisco that falls somewhere between Roxy Music and the xx — filtered, atmospheric and above all moody. “Bodymore” is a bit of a backwards love song — love sorted out by the process of elimination. Or maybe it’s not even love.

Best thing to hit my ears in weeks, maybe even months, and I don’t throw that out there lightly:

MOPP

music

MOPP

“Hold On” is one of those tracks that does a wonderful balancing act between pop and club. The guest vocals by Beth take on La Roux a bit, especially at the height of the track, but it’s MOPP that keeps the track from being a derivative of last year’s pop. The music is definitely something to try and make you “feel good”, “forget all your cares” and all that.

Emperor Machine

music

I’m a huge fan of the The Emperor Machine, and they have their own sound more than anyone. They really are emperors of the analog machines they use. Their outboard gear would make most gear junkies hard, and did I mention they play live as a band (watch the youtube)? Anyway, The Emperor Machine remixes are always fantastic, and they have remixed some of the biggest names. Here’s yet another great remix/dub of Architeq featuring Ilija Rudman. It’s out soon on Tirk. More from The Emperor Machine please.

Headman

music

Headman

Headman’s latest single “Private Show” is out April 16th. It features Steve Mason from the legendary but now defunct Beta Band, and has several remixes from the likes of Gomma co-boss Telonius and Tape to Tape, who I am loving right now. Telonius layers nice acid bass to the mix and Tape to Tape has brought two different remixes to the table (both which are my favourite on the release). The release also includes a dub of the original and an alternative version. More Relish gold! Heres some blog versions to wet the earbuds until the official release.

Miami Horror + Boss In Drama

music

Miami Horror + Boss In Drama

Boss In Drama has been busy locked away in some distant studio, but he had time to turn out this remix of Miami Horror’s “Sometimes.” Boss plays up the funk but keeps the carefreeness of the original. It makes me want to go swimming in the fountain of youth.

Penguin Prison + R.A.C.

music

Penguin Prison + R.A.C.

Where in the wide world did Penguin Prison come from? I had no idea who the gent was six months ago, but it seems like I don’t listen to anything but his remixes these days. Thanks be to the internet.

Fittingly, my favorite Penguin Prison tune just so happens to be a remix by yet another artist who came out of seemingly nowhere: R.A.C. The latter’s remix of the former’s “The Worse It Gets” is, simply put, one of the most pleasant songs I’ve ever heard. So maybe the lyrics aren’t the most uplifting – deal with it. If the vocalist’s intonations paired with these giddy instrumentals don’t put a smile on your face, you’re clearly a cold-hearted person doomed to eternal misery. So sorry.

Florrie

music

Florrie

Every March we’re thrown the new female indie pop star and like clockwork Florrie has arrived. She’s done some work with Xenomania so some of her sounds might be a bit too sweet for some, but the stuff she is doing with Fred Falke is pretty much ace. Perhaps a tad pedestrian but it’s pop so we can’t complain. Sure beats that snoozefest Ellie Goulding… with a stick.

In Flagranti

music

Codek/In Flagranti just sent over some of their latest goodies… It included “The Swinging Co-eds aka Mädchen, die nach München kommen” which is sample heavy and true to the In Flagranti style. They truly are brilliant at finding weird but wonderful samples and making it into a groovy dance jam. Get the high quality version exclusive at Juno. They’ve also sent this remix of Voltage across which features in this YouTube clip. It’ll be coming out on Cut Copy’s Cutters records.

Hawnay Troof

music

Hawnay Troof

SXSW is always filled with OMGWTF moments. They usually involve guest appearances, getting lost in east Austin looking for some obscure venue or finding out you and an A-list celeb share a love for the same band. But this year was a bit different, not because none of the above didn’t happen, but rather the biggest OMGWTF moment I witnessed was Hawnay Troof’s performance that involved an over eager and rather rabid fan. This might be a first for Vice Cooler… and could only happen at Southby…

JAMAICA – “I Think I Like U 2″

Meet Jamaica — actually, you probably already know them as Poney Poney but ponies are a wee bit 2007 and Caribbean islands apparently are not. You can download the single if you opt-in to their mailing list. We hate opting-in as much as you do so just head over to your favorite pirate site Hype Machine to get it on your hard drive quick.

Avan Lava

music

Avan Lava

Avan Lava is a new project made up of singer Tom Hennes and music maker Le Chev (the bassist for Fischerspooner). The duo just put out their debut “Vapors” EP which is available to download from their site (free as of now). Of course, if you dig it you should be showing support by dropping the five bucks at iTunes.

The EP itself explores different sides of Avan Lava — at times chill, other times experimental and lush. And then there is this pop moment, “The Easy Way”, which leans on Prince a bit but is also deeply rooted in electronic sounds.
