Hawnay Troof 1 Mar 2010

Vice Cooler just sent his new video out to us. We love cats and we love Hawnay Troof. His new video features an amazingly patient kitty, Jenny Hoyston from Erase Errata, artist Joey Mansfield, and designer Ari Fish.

ATX BY ATX 1 Mar 2010

It is that time of year again when music lovers from around the globe descend on Austin, Texas for a week of merrymaking better known as SXSW.

And here we are throwing our unofficial day party with Radar Maker and TheGlitoris

We’re super excited for this year as it is not only our fifth birthday party but also our label launch party with the Baby Monster single!

We have a killer line up that I am personally so psyched for — every band is top notch so this really will be the Thursday day party in ATX: Crystal Fighters, Baby Monster, We Are The World, Bonjay, Body Language and Missions.

We’re also psyched because we’re going to be at Austin’s #1 video bar Barbarella so we’re going to be showcasing the work of Moop Jaw and Pomp & Clout between band sets. If you like to space out and watch videos then join us!

And of course — it’s a lot of good music and fun for FREE. RSVP for priority!

Jump Jump Dance Dance + Human Life 25 Feb 2010

Jump Jump Dance Dance’s “Show Me The Night” is more catchy than h1n1… we’ve already been treated to a Grum remix and a trippy video. LA kids Human Life are the latest to catch the fever and have turned out their own remix of the track. They continue on a theme: so easy to love — & really makes you wanna get up and dance.

Crayon Fields 24 Feb 2010

BigStereo favorites Crayon Fields are coming to the States, and I couldn’t be more excited. They were on the top of my list for best album last year with ‘All the Pleasures of the World’. Go see them play and get ready to be romanticized.

Ssion 24 Feb 2010

Ssion – “Clown”

There is one band I love above the rest… Ssion, I love you. “Clown” just saved my life.

She & Him 24 Feb 2010

she & him

I love She & Him. Their individual tracks are simply adorable and the duo’s debut full-length – Volume One – tied them all together ever so nicely. Heck, the album dropped nearly two years ago, yet “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” is still prominently featured in my rotation of uplifting ditties. All this despite the fact that I have the attention span of a gnat.

Granted, it doesn’t hurt that I’ve been crushing on Zooey Deschanel since Almost Famous came out. And yes, I realize that I was only twelve when the aforementioned movie hit theaters. And no, I have no qualms with being madly in love with a woman eight years my superior whom I have never talked to (and with whom I will never be lucky enough to chat).

Anyways. New music. She & Him just released a track off Volume Two called “Thieves.” As expected, it’s beautiful. Also as expected, I can’t help but imagine Zooey singing this to me while we ride bikes on a secluded beach at sunset somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere. Creepy? Maybe. True? Most definitely.

Yes Giantess + Body Language 23 Feb 2010

body language

Body Language’s remix of “Demons” from Yes Giantess sounds like the original played under a highway, where the noise get weaved into the music and become a part of the rhythm. Worn out cassette tapes playing back big pop tracks, not quite chillwave but not quite club — a beautiful healthy mix:

I DON’T KNOW WHO YOU ARE, OK?!!!!

Penguin Prison + Jack Penate 22 Feb 2010

penguin prison

Penguin Prison is the latest artist to gain support from tastecreator Neon Gold, and given their track record, I’d say you should place your weekly allowance money on this guy. We mentioned Penguin Prison briefly before, mostly to make fun of his name, but the pure strength of his songs is what is propelling this dude. His new single “The Worst It Gets” will be out on Neon Gold — and there’s something pure magic about it. B-side “Something I’m Not” is the mergence of electronic and pop music, hints at club & top forty. Something we can totally believe in… So impossible not to love:

Penguin Prison – “Something I’m Not”

And then there is this gem. Rare that pop stars are great remixers but Penguin Prison’s remix of Jack Peñate is something special… it sounds more Penguin Prison than Jack Peñate which folks who read BIGSTEREO will enjoy. Penguin Prison lays his sound on the track so effortlessly that you forget that it’s a remix. And there is an urgency in this song that is so appealing — enjoy this (co)-premiere:

Ali Love + Prins Thomas 19 Feb 2010

Ali Love – “Love Harder”

Two new Ali Love goodies for you today –

1) Ali Love’s video for “Love Harder” which was directed by none other than Trevor Jackson. Seems to illustrate meeting that special someone at the club, a hot and steamy cab ride and of course, the moments after.

2) A wonderful remix from Prins Thomas of “Love Harder” — a dark space disco take on the original. Sounds a bit how the video looks, slightly disorienting and trippy but with a pay off.

It’s new Late Of The Pier… dizzying. Make sure to watch it to the end because things get crazy after the old lady. The single will be out on March 1st from Phantasy Sound.

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs 18 Feb 2010

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – “Roundhouse BlackBox Sessions”

Recorded and streamed live from The Roundhouse in Camden, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs delivers a pretty wonderful and special performance. This is a must watch… a bit reminisce of Ducks.

Yes Giantess + Baby Monster 17 Feb 2010

Yes Giantess latest “Ruins” is officially the first track Starsmith has ever produced for anyone other than Ellie Goulding. So as you can expect… big pop gestures in this track. So irresistible. Reminds me a bit of the male counter version to Shannon’s “Let The Music Play” — ha!

Yes Giantess – “The Ruins”

Baby Monster remixed the track and have subdued it quite a bit… but still keep it pure pop. This is like the rainy day version.

Yes Giantess – “The Ruins” (Baby Monster Remix)

“The Ruins” is out on Neon Gold. Super limited edition… pre-order now. Keep an eye out for remixes from Fear of Tigers and Clock Opera as well.

Baby Monster’s new single is out on our own label — pre-order available as well ;)

Silver Columns + The Time and Space Machine 17 Feb 2010

Silver Columns has been revealed. There was a bit of “mystery” as to who they are and now we can say for sure that they are Adem and Johnny Lynch aka the Pictish Trail. I think everybody kinda “knew” that, but thank god the cat is out of the bag so people can stop focusing on “who” and start focusing on how good their music is…

“Cavalier” is their third single and will be landing on a Moshi Moshi record. The Time and Space Machine have remixed the track and it’s about as odd as anything else we’ve heard from Silver Columns. There’s definitely an 80’s new wave feel to the vocals but instead of being a throwback it’s very much about now. Maybe not as catchy as the Joe Goddard remix of “Brow Beaten” but still solid.
