Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Ok yeah this post is totally blogvious but my love affair with the YYYs has been longer than most: Unitard, basements, The EP, small clubs, Fever To Tell, “Maps”, large theaters, larger theatres, award shows…. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were perhaps my favorite band to watch grow from nothing to the cover of magazines.
But then they lost me.
They lost with me with Show Your Bones — not because it was different but because it lacked soul and passion. It just kinda sat there lifeless. Not that it had to be loud or shocking to maintain attention, but Bones kinda seemed like nothing more than an excuse too cash in on “Maps” 2. It was trying to hard. Posing for the sake of posing rather than posing for the sake of music.
To be honest I gave up on them. But they won my heart back today with “Zero”, the first single off their new album, It’s Blitz! It leaked today… I’m sure you can find some shitty quality rip if you look around. But that’s not the point. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are back, but, like, really back. This is it… this is why I fell in love with Nick Zinner and Karen O. in some shitty basement almost ten years ago. A new sound in a new direction but so on target. If the album stands up to this single then we’re in for a real treat:

that was quick!

I kinda agree on show your bones but one listen to “Turn Into” makes me believe the record has a LOT of soul. or at least just that song. it’s so mega passionate.

Been a fan for some time now… show your bones was a lazily thrown together album but it had its bright spots… I am eagerly awaiting this new venture so to revitalize my enthusiasm for the yyy! Mega talented bunch they are

I’m glad the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are back, especially with a song as good as this! I agree, “Bones…” lacked something, and you hit it right on the head. Thanks to “Zero” and hopefully the rest of the album, I’m once more a FAN. I heard that for the track, none of the band members let Nick Zinner use a guitar, and that’s why there’s so much synth in the track. I think the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are heading in a new, better direction.

i’ve been following the YYYs for just about as long, however i can’t agree on SYB.. IMO the difference in the sound came more from the first being recorded in NYC and the 2nd being recorded in LA.. not the difference between passion and laziness. i can’t put it any other way.. they just *sound* like they were recorded/influenced in/by those cities, respectively.
there was soul and quality in SYB and honestly, while Fever To Tell had better singles, after being so used to the raw energy of the live versions of the songs they had before Fever To Tell even came out, once I heard the “album versions” they felt.. sapped in comparison.
with that being said i love love love this new track and am excited for the new album.

gAH
Just got the new album. It’s terrible. Zero is definately the best track. If you think SYB was souless… this is worse. Everything is just drab and boring. Sounds like a crappier version of SYB.
nice production though
