South Central

south central higher state

We briefly mentioned South Central’s cover of the Josh Wink classic “Higher State of Consciousness” back in September… well now the track is getting the the video treatment. South Central’s take on “Higher State” adds a ton of noise and distortion — like the original is exploding into binary code across digital sound waves. But if anything “Higher State” is further proof that South Central are the pros at building up a track into pure chaos:

South Central – “Higher State”

South Central’s long awaited The Owl of Minerva came out this past week. This is a collection of South Central’s work from the past two years paving the way for their debut album set for release in 2009. You can pick it up at iTunes.

Annnnnd for reference here is the refreshed video of the Wink version circa 2007. Typical house party video with lots of skin/mascots/drugs/blacklights. We’ve seen it a million times before — in music video format and in real life:

  1. has anyone EVER been to a party like that? seriously?

(if so, where do I find them please?)

  2. So stoked when I finally got my hands on the japan only release version a few months ago. Now have to go and physically pick up the US version just for the support.

For any new comers to this site or this band, make sure and give SOUTH CENTRAL’s amazing repertoire of remixes a listen if you are late to the game.

Dom, Yes those parties are the only parties worth a shit. Clearly you need a new group of “friends” that consist of the rich/popular good looking variety.

  3. p.s. I envy every lucky European that has gotten the privilege of enjoying south central live.

  5. Josh Wink & Roland TB303 …
    EPIC…

  6. wait, what? the second video is not a version josh wink did. that was some other jagoffs too. afaik there is no video for the original “higher state of consciousness (tweakin acid funk mix)”. i almost didn’t hate the south central cover but then decided it was shit when he started screaming “higher state”. the second video is also utter rubbish. what nonsense! i haven’t read the rest of your blog yet, was pointed here by somebody else just to see this, but why bother posting crap? am i missing something?

    • the video is the dirty south & tv rock remix from the 2007 release. it’s just for a point of reference… and the video is kinda fun itself.

you don’t have to like the south central version. obviously it’s different. it’s a cover of sorts. if you were expecting wink part 2 then yeah i guess you’d be disappointed.

    • oh and there is an actual video from the original release… not the original version but one of the original remixes. good luck finding it though. i couldn’t.

      • Now that you mention it I do faintly recollect a video for the “hardhouse” mix that appeared on Amp, but I think that might have been something produced specifically for that show.

And not to pick nits, but the original version of the track is not the same as the “tweekin acid funk mix” that became wildly popular due to the 303 line. Here’s the skinny:

I don’t really understand why you call the dirty south tv rock version a point of reference. The only point of reference necessary is the classic cut from 1995. I was disappointed with the dirty south version primarily because it had a lot of potential exactly as a cover, but went horribly abysmally wrong with the screaming. It was cheeky and clever, and then it turned into something just plain awful.

Then again, that’s sort of what happened with the tweekin acid funk version for a while there, innit. ;)

  7. the 2nd video is an ad for Abercrombie & Fitch right?

  8. point of reference in that the video was discussed on this site before (see above link).
