Gonzales

Gonzales is back from a long hiatus to drop his new album ‘Soft Power‘ on Mercury Records. For those not familiar, Gonzales produced both of Feist’s albums and has been a long time producer/collaborator with Peaches. He also seems to have Teki Latex doing his digital PR (he’s the one that sent me the track), so he must be doing something right.
When I first listened to this song, I started getting mental flashbacks to clips from the Muppet Show and Sesame Street. Glimpses of the sketches where everyone sits around the piano while Kermit the Frog whistles and Big Bird claps and then pans out to show all the puppets singing in harmony. There is speculation (by his dad!) that he has gone too commercial, but there’s a time and place for everything and I’m sure he hasnt lost his original sound. People may have many influences (both commercial and non-commercial) the way Gonzales sees it ‘I firmly believe that the music we hear while in the mother’s womb is our only true “influence”‘ And you can never quite lose that. I guess we can decide when we hear the rest of the album….

I love Gonzales. I saw him play at 93ft East in London a few years ago expecting a Presidential Suite set. He just sat at the piano in the dingy main room and played an hour long medley of pop hits from over the decades intertwined with his own fine work. I would kill for a recording of that. What an entertainist.

I was at that 93 feet east gig too, French France. I was right at the front (fattish girl in the white jacket). Sadly don’t have a recording but have pictures!!
He didn’t sing a word at that gig until the very end. Can’t wait for this album – love everything he does. Seen him in France and the gig had different vibes than the UK – more older people!!
