Von Iva
14 August 2007 :: posted by Travis
Only a city know for it’s disco could give birth to a band this hot. San Francisco’s Von Iva has finally released their first full length much to its cult following delight. It has been a long wait since the band’s 2005 ep.
For those unfamiliar, Von Iva sounds a bit like the Gossip at their danciest — like a MSTRKRFT remix or even better. If that doesn’t grab your attention then here are two choice tracks from Our Own Island that’ll have you craving more.
Von Iva - “LALA” (mp3)
Von Iva - “Do It!” (mp3)
Our Own Island could be a favorite of 2007… expect these guys to blow up big. We’ve been expecting it for years, but ‘07 might be the time.
Ladies, look for Von Iva’s clothing line this Fall. Until then check out Our Own Island at your favorite local record store or iTunes.

I don’t like her voice. why? tried hard to like their old EP cause of their coolness but nope…

thanks for the groovy tunes.
i dropped you a link @ my boring blog. loving yours.

I like the instrumentals on “LALA”…but the vocals/song structure isn’t really doing it for me. The second song is just a little boring for me. Of course, I never really liked The Gossip all too much…so I have no idea why I am even listening to this. I also don’t know why I’m leaving such a negative comment.
I still love you Travis. I still love you.
(but not like THAT)

what an annoying voice. lame production. sounds like they tried to rock up some lame gospel shit or something. and they failed even on that part.
to compare this to the gospel or mstrkrft….
and then these hollywood haircuts. shitty!

roger, you mean gossip right?
but yeah, fully agreed. her voice is’nt cutting it.
i feel like im listening to an r&b reject track.
they should just stick to their clothes.
thanks.

oh yeah i meant gossip of course hehe
and i wonder what their clothes look like
August 16th, 2007 at 7.46 am
they are most likely wearing them.

im not into this at all. i agree, her voice is bothering me and the lyrics arent helping. I cant see how this sounds ANYTHING like a MSTRKRFT remix or Gossip as stated in the review/description.

gosh, you guys are a hard crowd… But I stand by it.
I have the opposite reaction to the voice. Its a classic rock twist that you wouldn’t normally find on a track like this. Sometimes the unexpected is hard to stomach.
And I’m calling you all out. If someone with a penis made the same track yall would be hot for it. Or if the vox were light and airy and diminutive.
August 17th, 2007 at 3.37 am
No travis, bad music is hard to stomach. You would not normally find a voice on a track like this because the vocals sound like crap. I think the vocalist has a penis and thats the problem.
August 17th, 2007 at 4.36 am
hehe that’s funny.
but i do agree, this is not hard to digest because it’s something we don’t know, this is just very very bad music. my computer went a little crazy before and it played the song twice as fast so the track got this 90’s space invader high pitch effect. that sounded a bit better!
oh yeah, and the lyrics are maybe the worst of all!

“No travis, bad music is hard to stomach. You would not normally find a voice on a track like this because the vocals sound like crap.”
well that’s not totally subjective… back it up.
August 17th, 2007 at 4.33 pm
but travis, isn’t commmenting on this music called a discussion, which makes it subjective from the start?
August 17th, 2007 at 9.11 pm
well of course all of this is subjective. but someone saying they don’t like something because they sound like a fat lesbian doesn’t hold much weight. i don’t like mushrooms because they’re gross. who cares?? some of these comments are just petty, and their arguments aren’t backed up which makes their case weak. unless you have shit load of indie cred, just saying you don’t like something (or you do like something) doesn’t mean much to anyone.
but rogier, i never doubt your opinion… you always back it up. so please keep on disagreeing!!

I read this blog all the time, but never comment, but I HAD TO this time because I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE who was having a problem with her voice lol
I listened to a lot of their songs on imeem because I always check out what you recommend, but…I tried, I really tried, just….no, not for me lol
love this site….just had to say it…. ;)

[...] Iva Listen to Von Iva. Hot chicks playing post-disco sounding like the bastard child of The Gossip and ESG. [...]

wow, some of these comments are a little immature, especially the stuff about penises and lesbians and fatness. I for one enjoy this music because it is so different. I’m glad there is actually music out there that isn’t the same rehashed stuff over and over, and I’m glad the vocalist doesn’t sound like every other female pop and/or rock female vocalist out there. Just because it’s different doesn’t make it bad. It’s just not what you’re used to…there’s nothing wrong with stepping outside the box every now and again.

If you have never seen Von Iva Live you have no Idea what you are in store for. Tight, fast beat, great keys, you wont even notice the absense of a guitar. The voice of Jillian Iva is powerful and yet sensitive to the nature of the song. The women ROCK!
