Check Yo, Daft Punk, Kayne West, DJ Pumpkin Patch
18 July 2007 :: posted by Travis :: add to favsA couple related loose ends here:
1) I forgot to mention in my Check Yo Ponytail post that it is FRIDAY and not Saturday. If you show up on Saturday you’ll be dancing alone because everybody else will be at Daft Punk… if you need tix our contest is still open so drop us an email before Friday: contests@bigstereo.net — please play fair.
Check Yo with Plastic Little and Thunderheist!!!
2) The Toof has an interesting post today pulling all the Kayne West/Daft Punk stuff into a nice, neat little package. I had been working on a Kayne West post for a couple weeks now, but it’s never gonna make it outta draft… So, to add a couple thoughts: Is Kayne West’s “Stronger” America’s acceptance of dance music? It seems like dance music in America has reached a level not seen since perhaps the disco days… which is quite exciting.
And if you remember just five years ago when P. Diddy struggled with electro — he was working with Hell and Felix Da Housecat and there were all the rumours of Diddy’s electroclash album. It’s kinda amazing how far we’ve come in such a short time. Either that or West just has bigger balls (which might go without saying).
3) AND AND AND. I’ve been sitting on this for a couple weeks, but I can’t wait any longer. To get you in the mood for Daft Punk taking over America, we have DJ Pumpkin Patch’s Daft Crunk mixtape. Oh man, I’m embarassed to say I won’t be catching Daft Punk “live”, but I am insanely jealous of anyone who does…

That video is Kanye trying to one up So_me. So at the next video awards instead of name dropping “Pam Anderson” and “A Million Dollars” he can drop Daft Punk and not sound so out of step.
This video makes me hate Kanye more.

i love kanye west. how come no one say anything when busta rhymes sampled daft punks technologic in his song Touch It? both rappers used daft punk songs respectively and did a good job. good songs

g: While I do think Kanye is alright, and I like some of his songs for sure. I honestly think that he ruined one of my favorite songs of all time (harder, better, faster, stronger. . .)! It’s the same as that Live Earth fesco with Sting and the Police, he just said “Yeah” over and over.
When it comes to Busta Rymes, he seriously lost his flavor ever sense that Janet Jackson duet thing in the 90’s. I liked that, but he better keep his hands off of Daft Punk in the future. That goes for every “talented rapper”!

ummm kanye west is a bitch. just look @ what he does when he doesn’t win awards. this is not america’s acceptance of dance music. it’s bullshit. i guess because it’s typically upbeat, doesnt talk alot about bitches, hoes, making money, pickup trucks, or killing people, its not considered good music. kids these days are not open minded at all when it comes to music. they get spoon fed top 40 crap from mtv and radio. those that do listen to other stuff get fucked with or spend alot of time alone. remember i am just speaking from personal experience so it might be different elsewhere. will america’s dance scene ever reach the level of what goes on in europe? probably not,, but as long as we help spread the word, and introduce people to new music we can only hope. maybe they’ll play the chemical brothers new song “the salmon dance” on the radio, maybe then people will start listening, fat chance.

You know, I really like the mix for Stronger, so I went and got a copy of the instrumental version. Kanye West’s ego is bigger than all of France – so I guess he just felt the need to bring in Daft Punk.
But like said in the post, if it helps bring the Electro/House scene to North America, I’ll be fine with his involvement. On a side note, that Toof link showed quite the suprise with Kanye teaming up with So_me, so I think rather than one-upping him, he’s just trying to go par for the course.
As for this Daft Punk mix you’ve got here? So far I’m totally digging it. Good find!

I hate this Kanye guy so much, even before he got famous, his fucking attitude put me off his music, regardless how good it was.
I’ve disliked this guy from day one, and as his ego grew I became more and more certain I was justified in my aversion.
And now this? The guy manages to rape BOTH Daft Punk AND Akira in one swift move?
I hope to god Kanye gets whats coming to him, namely getting gangbanged by a group of hairy shemales.

Sometimes you just have to listen to the music and block out everything else surrounding people like Kayne. I think he alright !

you guys are acting dumb man just cos you hate 50 cent/lil jon and the whole gangster thing dont do take that hate to kanye. he’s about the only rapper out there who makes his own music as well as his rhymes. the guy is talented as fcuk. and the fact that he can turn even daft punk into hip-hop!? when it comes to sampling he’s pretty much a genius.
honestly if you dont like this song yet, speed it up to 115-120 bpm and try it again, cos then the daft punk chorus sounds like the original and the whole song just works better. that’s basically what they did when it got spun at onelove@tank 2 weeks ago and everyone fell in love with it.

the only bad thing i can say is i hate that america has found out about daft punk again cos already there’s american versions of overseas electro groups springing up and this can only mean trouble. look at kap10kurt, new york’s version of kavinsky, and they are pretty crap in fact xinobi sh*ts all over them.
its hell annoying how quickly americanos can make any type of music commercial just because the record labels can spot where the money is. thank god for sydney i guess where artists dont get rewarded for anything so it all stays underground.
J
July 19th, 2007 at 5.58 pm
to be fair kap10kurt has been doing his thing for as long if not longer than kavinsky.
america doesn’t have the same scene as europe or even australia… i don’t think it’s has to do with making things commercial — it’s just middle america has a very set idea of what music is… it takes time to undo years and years of top 40 brainwashing. but if anything — we are seeing a decentralization of underground music. it’s not just the big metro areas that are putting out decent stuff. it’s a very good time to be alive.

ahhhk my bad dude i read on a GBH review of dangerseekers that kap10kurt was america’s answer to kavinsky and didnt cross check it was right.
but yeah i get what your saying and im definitely not disagreeing that there is awesome music coming out at the moment

wow this shocked me, i really thought a bunch of people were going to say how much they loved Kanye, seems everyone did at least for one moment. To be honest I disliked the guy from the start. Two hilarious Kanye moments: Kanye on Punked(don’t ask why i watched) and Kanye with the Police for Live Earth(you really think he raps well? the whole song its him going uh uh uh uh uh uh uh, i guess at least he rhymes.)
Rchrd Oh?!

Holy Shit…
Kanye’ has already changed the game…Let it go!
Like Diddy, he’s financially secure…
He could sit on his ass all day, everyday, for the rest
of his life, if he wanted to yet he chooses not to…
As far as his Daft-theft is concerned, lets just say that everyone
bites off someone or something in the realm of artisty…
Do you really think Daft, Justice, Kavinski, Akira Kurosawa
and the rest of the previously referenced artists discovered something that hadn’t partially been done before???
Try digging in some crates and listen to the likes of Kraftwerk, Neu!, Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force etc..
[Kurosawa bit William Shakespeare, Dostoevsky, Georges Simenon
& Leo Tolstoy.]
We could argue that A-Trak’s presence might have had something
to do with Kanye’s evolving stilo but if I recall, rhymers & thugs
were still wearing clothes that ridiculously hung off their asses,
when Kanye began his metamorphosis?
Today, the streamlined look, prep stylings and nu-rave genre’
has penetrated the hipster hop nation, because of his and many
other influences and I am glad to see the boundaries have been
re-defined with more creativity and auditory challenge…
Props to K. West, Wale’, Lupe’ Fiasco, Madlib, Pharrell, Pharoahe Monch, Mos Def and many others who are continuing to fuel this evolution…
I’d rather listen to “Stronger,” than the rest of that Umbrella bullshit
that seems to be as rampant as the bubonic plague.

you know, people can slag off the kanye song if they don’t like it (and cos kanye’s a bell-end), but you can’t slag him off for stealing daft punk, like i said on missingtoof he did a lot more with it than daft punk did when they nicked it from this:

LV said it… I’m not really interested in who samples what. That argument is old.
I think what is interesting is that West used such a recognizable sample… Whatever anyones personal feelings about West are… he is a big deal in the States. It is a bit of a cultural baramoter… which is exciting.

you’re right Travis… i’m personally not a fan of west, his music or his genre of music, especialy the crap that most top 40 pop/rnb artists produce – yet i think its awesome hes used a daft punk song and done, not an amazing, but reasonable (i wouldn’t expect any more from this type of music) job of it. At least now some kids who are brainwashed with top 40 music will have the opportunity to be introduced to and hopefully discover more decent tunes.

to who ever is so ignorant as to be so shock and awed that kanya would dare to sample your beloved gods daft punk: yes they are brilliant, but so is freaking kanye, so please take a seat. thanks! kanye had to pay for the sample, daft punk had to permit him to use the sample. daft punk’s whole career is based on sampling old funk music…hip hop is about referencing and co-opting, resampling, re-shuffling, re-contextualizing, cut and paste, mix and match. electro and techno computer music evolves from this freedom. its kind of a full circle action here and not so surprising. afterall, you bigstereo fans love re-edits of hiphop and crunk dontcha! so why can’t the same happen the other way, or is this only a one way street of co-optation and appropriation? hmmm? what’s surprising is how closed minded so-called alternative, indie, underground electronic music nerds really are (hihi) but thatls alright..you have plenty of time to grow up…

AH! All this time I thought I was the only one not totally loving Kanye, and now all these wonderful comments, YEAH! I just don’t get the point of putting his lame rap over a bunch of already famous songs like this or “Young Folks”. Taking a small excerpt and looping or so is cool, but this is just rediculous…

The Stronger song and it’s lyrics are a blatant diss against Justice and their “stealing” of his award. He’s a cry baby who should stick to producing (which he’s stellar at) and keep his big trap shut.
