2 June 2007 :: posted by Travis :: add to favsOh shit. Now that’s what I’m talking about. Much happier with the Gossip’s video remake of “Listen Up” than I was with the original a year ago.
Note: this version is directed by Whitey McConnaughy who also did the videos for The Thermals’ “Pillar of Salt” and Panther’s “You Don’t Want Your Nails Done”… two other videos we loved.
Murray Hill is a God.
I am not liking the over produced vocals in this version of “Listen Up.” Wtf. All the soul is gone. Crap. If this is the direction the Gossip is headed then I will cry lots.

hmmm. it seems the band is trying to take advantage of beth ditto’s 15 minutes. no problem here, the song still sounds hot, AND the video has some nice gender bending layers, something that needs to get spread to the masses.

I don’t know that I like the new version of the song – that said, the video is an improvement but not enough to make up for the inadequacies of the new version of the song

I do not like the new version of the song. all the raw plain producing is gone and it’s prepared for the masses. also the video looks too much average-mtv to me. the gender thing is not enough to make it interesting either.

well here’s worst case scenario: the band is already on a major. their next album turns out to be over produced on par with le tigre’s this island. the album isn’t well received… anywhere except by perez hilton. the band goes on a hiatus. brace paine become this creepy james iha-ish type character who wanders around the east village. beth ditto goes on to record a solo album with timbaland and the neptunes… fergie has a guest spot. hannah joins an obscure indie rock band that no one really cares about.
worst case scenario. let’s pray it doesn’t happen, but this garbage is the first steps…
