NWT: Siouxsie & The Banshees

8 May 2007 :: posted by Missingtoof

Because of their last incarnation, many will say that Soiuxsie & The Banshees were not new wave. But a band with a career that spans 20 years is allowed to try on many different hats & though the hat Siouxsie & the Banshees last wore was decidedly more dark (i.e. goth) their roots were bathed in the post punk/new wave scene of the late 70’s.

Formed after the fall out of The Sex Pistols, which was also the time that punk was assumed to be officially dead, the band’s line up consisted of Siouxsie, Steven Severin, Marco Pirroni (later of Adam & The Ants) & John Simon Ritchie (later known as Sid Vicious). Further down the road the band was joined by Robert Smith & Budgie of the Slits who Siouxsie later married & formed The Creatures with.

Along with Bauhaus, The Cure & Joy Division, Siouxsie & the Banshees were one of the most important & influential bands of that era. The Banshees disbanded in 1996 however Siouxsie and Budgie still make music as The Creatures (last album 2004). In 2006 Siouxsie signed a contract with Universal to produce a solo album.

    Who sampled who? Schooly D was just a kid when Happy House came out (1980). Maybe you mean SatB sampled Schooly D at a later date? That I don’t know. And also, the initial Banshees line up (at the 100 Club, 1976) was before Sid joined Sex Pistols in 1977, not after SPs fall out. Brittish punk was still an infant in 1976.

    it is sampled by mindless self indulgence in their song Bitches…..

    I’ve been obsessed with the song “Slowdive” lately!
