Armand Van Helden
18 April 2007 :: posted by TravisPity party: I was one of the lucky New Englanders without power from this stupid storm. We’ve been roughing it at three star hotels since Monday — so Little House on the Prairie let me tell you. Electricity was finally restored a couple hours ago… which is good for you because I have a stack of mp3s for your listening ears.

Armand Van Helden is one of the few mega-djs/producers who always has his ear on the pulse and taps whatever sound before it blows up too big. His latest Ghettoblaster is no exception — from that album title you don’t need to be psychic to know which direction the man is headed. Hm, basically if you’re looking for the gritty electro of his last album, Nympho, you’ll be in for a surprise. Ghettoblaster features a ton of talent from the likes of Fat Joe, Roxy Cottontail and Nicole Roux — and a complete reworking of Kudu’s “Playing House” that is one of the major highlights of the disc.
But Roxy Cottontails’ rude “Playmate” is the track. You’re gonna be hearing this all over mix tapes in about five seconds. Just be careful with this one… Playboy loves to throw out the C&Ds.

Ah man, and get your hands on “Je T’aime” because it brings it back to like when La Bouche ruled the floor. I totally mean that in the best possible way. For real. I love La Bouche.
Totally brash but “Touch Your Toes” sets the tone for the album. Perfect first single:

I love his dookey-chain!! but the song isn´t that cool

Those vocals are painful to listen to.
AVH is a bit of a sellout here.
NYC Beat remixes are nice (MSTRKRFT etc) but originals seem wank.

ah man guys… there you go again. i think you all are expecting way too much from AVH or roxy. they’re doing what they do…
just remember to have fun because that’s all this is about. don’t take it so serious. this isn’t idm. cmon!

From what I’ve heard of the album so far, it’s just run of the mill. Plain and uninteresting.

The first track “Go Crazy” AVH actually uses freakin “Orch Hit” samples. They got outta date in the early 90’s and even that was too late. Lame.

i wouldn’t be suprised if armand produced an album after this featuring more top 40 artist collaborations.

Armand van Helden is one of the best DJ’s I know. he combines guitars and danceable beats together. For me he is the best combination of dance and some rock to dance to. I would do anything to see him play.

I see nothing wrong with grabbing samples from the past. I think it’s a pretty strong album, Je T’aime is a wee bit cheesy but it’s damn good! It’s a well funky album I think it’s far too easy to be over analytical about it! Chill out and enjoy man!
