Ghostland Observatory

ghosts

I don’t know where i’ve been the last year, but somehow I managed to let Ghostland Observatory slip through the musical cracks of my life. This duo of front man Aaron Behrens and producer/drummer Thomas Turner is straight outta Austin, TX, but sound like they’re straight outta ‘where-have-they-been-all-my-life, USA.’ They’ve cranked out two albums last year on Trashy Moped Records and things don’t seem to be slowing down. I’m not sure if I’ve ever had a song make me want to get up jump out of my chair and scream within the first two seconds of a song…I can only imagine how crazy they are live. Since I missed their last few tours/music festival circuits, I’ll just have to keep an eye out b/c I’m also a sucker for a man in white pants and aviators…..or a cape.

  1. hysterical

    love it!

  2. the most amazing musical experience of my life was at a ghostland concert in Austin. They played “silver city” and dozens of people from the audience got on stage and danced all out of control. By the end, the audience had erupted into a giant dance party, and everyone on stage and in the audience applauded as they finished, because it was just that bad ass.

“Paparazzi lightning” is a must have for any legitimate dance party.

    word.

  3. They are absolutely awesome. Knew nothing about them, then saw them live at SXSW. Everybody was blitzed off of open bar and dancing like fucking nutjobs. Truly amazing.

  4. these guys are awesome. i dj’ed piano man last night at the all teeth and knuckles gig and had 2 kids ask me what it was. dope.

  5. I’m guessing you don’t read Gorilla vs. Bear, ’cause he mentions them, like, every other post.

He also posted a great mashup by Car (Stereo) Wars of Ghostface Killah vs Ghostland Observatory, called, obviously, Ghostface Observatory:

I also gave remixing them a try, here with the Silver City instrumental and vocals from Tony Matterhorn’s “Pour a little liquor”:

  8. I saw them at the ACL festival last year. Had never heard of them. They were laughably bad. And there were plenty of people laughing at them. I’m really amazed that there is all this positive hype about the band. From what I saw, they were really, really bad. Sort of funny, but mostly just unlistenable. Of course, there are a lot of bands I love that I didn’t care for at first, so who knows how I’ll feel about them a year from now? I guess I’m just wondering if anyone else finds them as lame as I do.

  9. Why is the Genre for ‘Face to Face’ listed as ‘Gay’??

  10. Oh my GOD! Saw them tear the house down at the sold out show at Bowery Ballroom in NYC last night. They played for 2hrs straight without ever skipping a beat. Aaron’s energy was off the radars. Trully the best dancy party i’ve been to in ages. I think I may become a groupie!!!!

  11. I’m sorry everyone, you’ll have to excuse Ollezazazazazaza. Unfortunately, he/she is an amateur when it comes to musical taste. So sad…

  12. Just saw these guys for the first time at ACL…….UNREAL how amped the crowd was as well as the light show that went along with it all…….

  13. I live in Austin, but wasn’t familiar with GO’s sound, though I’d heard plenty of excitement from other locals after last year’s ACL Fest. Working the festival as a volunteer during the show, I was mesmerized by the beats and by the lights which were firing just as night had fallen over our wonderful Zilker Park. Again, though the GO show was entirely new to me, it was truly one of the very best ACL Fest shows for me this year…and I wasn’t even drinkin’! Wicked!!

  14. Mark you may have been laughing at last years ACL but trust me nobody else was. You probably will not read this since it is so old but GLO did so well at last years ACL they were invited back with a better time slot this year.

  15. Best. Band. Ever.

Listen to the future of music.

  16. Ghostland is wicked awesome. I’ve seen them 5 times around the Dallas and Austin area. They kill every show. Their albums are just as good. What’s cool is that their two regular ass dudes with families that go up and rock their balls off every night. You could tell on Conan there was a giddy school kid side of them that was geniunely happy as hell to be on the show. Whereas some just go cos they are forced to by their labels. If they put out one more solid album and tour it is gonna be game over for them being a small time gig.

It is a toss up between them and the Hives of who has the best live show. If they’d team up I’d prolly barf from intensity.

  17. These guys were the best at Vegoose-hope to see them again soon-my kids told me about them. I’m 51 and we danced like it was our last.
OK!!!!!!! What planet it that Mark from-response from april 2007?
Did he see the same band I saw—-obviously he doesn’t get it..
Too bad for him! I’m sorry.

  18. I wouldn’t mind being part of one of their families… Just heard them for the first time a few weeks ago on PBS, and am collecting their albums, got tickets to the Seattle show blah blah! I LOVE to lay in bed late at night with my headphones, and listen to this stuff!!

  19. Fantastic, fantastic! Great at Langerado, counting down to SoCo in Atlanta. Called my nieces in Md and told to go go to DC and have an incredible time this Saturday nite with GLO. Can’t get enough!

  20. They are beyong terrific, phenominal and stellar :O)

  21. A year and a half later and they are going stronger than ever!!!

I’m gonna fly to see them in texas on 10/10 + 11

And then see them in Chicago in Nov.

Best thing to happen to music in ages……
