NWT: Nervous Gender

SxSW & various other events had us on hiatus last week but New Wave Tuesday is back! & this time not on a Thursday! Today we venture into the late 70’s L.A. underground scene with Nervous Gender. NG was a punk band formed in 1978 but their heavy use of synthesizers later led to them being deemed as one of the creators of Synth Punk.
Phranc’s androgynous appearance led to the groups name and added to their appeal. They enjoyed somewhat of a high profile however obscene lyrics & profanity ensured that they would never get any radio play.
This is video of Nervous Genders performing live after Phranc left & Paul Roessler of the Screamers joined up with the band. Check out the drummer! He’s like nine!

Nervous Gender – “Monsters” (mp3)
Nervous Gender disbanded around 1988 but reunited as a trio in early 1990 until Geraldo died in 1992 at the age of 33. As of 2005, Edward Stapleton, Michael Ochoa and Joe Zinnato were reviewing all of the Nervous Gender material with an eye towards releasing a NG retrospective.
You can pick up their original recordings on ebay & gemm. They are on myspace & there’s links to buy their’ Live the Roxy’ & ‘Live at the Scream’ albums.
