Khan

Khan

Is it too early in the year to call Khan’s Who Never Rests the best album of 2007? If you know Captain Comatose then you know Khan, as he was one half of that band. Who Never Rests follows down the same path as previous Captain Comatose and Khan projects — there aren’t many surprises here. But on this latest offering, Khan has definitely honed in on his craft and created an album short of a masterpiece. In the digital age, we’re often totally over saturated with singles that we sometimes forget about albums. Who Never Rests made me fall in love with the album format all over again. No hyperboles — I swear.

Khan doesn’t go the easy route and bow to the latest trends. Even so, Who Never Rests is so deeply rooted in both rock and disco that you could probably woo both you indie rock and electro new rave friends with it. Lots of meat here to make you think.

  1. I’m shocked anyone would claim this about “Who Never Sleeps.” It’s easily one of the worst albums I’ve heard all year. Maybe you have to be a fan of his previous work to enjoy this; but in my opinion he can barely sing, all of the arrangements ape Beck and LCD Soundsystem and barely any of it warrants a second listen. If it’s short of a masterpiece, it’s short by miles and miles.

  2. oh good, negative nancy, i was scared you were talking about “who never rests” album by Khan, but it looks like you got the wrong post and are trash talking “who never sleeps”…

  3. In the end there are only very few artists who really create an exciting mixture out of electro and indie music. And I don’t think this is one of them.

  4. wow… really steve?! i would’ve had you pegged for this album. the lcd comment is a little off since he’s been doing this pre-lcd, and well beck… he’s worn so many hats by now that you could argue anyone is a sorry rip off. plus, i don’t know if beck every reached khan level of darkness.

steve, have you listened to captain comatose — i don’t think you really need c.c. as a reference point for this album, but i’d be curious of your thoughts.

Z, this has very little to do with electro so I guess that is ok?

  5. Oh pechanga, where would we be without your wit?

I haven’t heard CC; and if it sounds much like this album, it’s more than likely that I never will.

I guess what I should have said re: LCD Soundsystem is that in a cultural period where LCD are the huge forerunners of this style of music, it’s easiest for me to identify Khan with them. Because Tomlab so nicely sent me a copy, I’ll probably end up giving “Who Never Rests” another listen so I can give it a more comprehensive review.

Nice exchanging music chat with you, Travis! Glad it didn’t get silly.

  6. as a lurker and big fan of this blog, this guy is kind of crummy. ;(

  7. I agree, best album of 2007. If its not your thing than fine. I agree he isn’t going to win a singing competition, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t do a great job. The attitude in this album is not expressed so well anywhere else. I’ve got to check out captain comatose now.
