Young Love
5 January 2007 :: posted by TravisOh damn — forgive me, but I don’t know how this one slipped by us. I love me some Young Love, and I love me some Gossip. So Young Love covering The Gossip should be a good thing? Wrong. I really really wanted to love Young Love’s cover of “Standing In The Way Of Control”, but after a first listen I’m just left with an awful feeling… like the same feeling I get when I watch the Lawrence Welk show. I imagine a lot of polyester and bad hair.
Dan Keye’s voice just does nothing for “SITWOC”, and gosh… the instruments suck all the life out of the original. The synth in the begining is promising, but it stops there. It just feels like a bad joke… one better left with friends. Covers like this belong in the shower or a drunk night out doing the karaoke.
Or maybe it’s just the 96 kbps… because I have a feeling at a higher bitrate it might sound 99 times better.
Or maybe we’re just totally spoiled by Soulwax’s take that anything after that is going to sound like complete rubbish.

totally agree with you travis… what a shame, and why? why do some people make decisions like this? are they aware of what they are doing? does he think he can make it better? (because that’s the only legible reason for covering the work of somebody else)

young love is as shallow and blatently targeted at big label execs as his old aforementioned band. and that justice rip-off project he probably has in mind for 2010 isn’t going to fly either..

DEFINTELY sounds like Mr. Keyes recorded this at a Kareoke bar and for the chorus someone was shaking him violently….total bummer! I thought his previous band Recover’s ep “Ceci N’est Pas Recover” was pretty damn good at the time though, gotta be honest, I was young at the time!

At a loss for words.. was this an A&R guys idea? “hey, BIG BIG with the kids, instead of a remix we’ll do a cover” Sounds like a terrified adolescent being forced to sing at gun point. You’ve seen Youg Love live and still “love” them?

The cover was done for fun because he likes the song and The Gossip. I agree with moulon, you sound like a bunch of haters. The new CD, Too Young to Fight It, has some really good songs on it, all originals that Dan wrote. Underneath the Night Sky is one of my favs, and of course Discotech and Find a New Way are really great. He, personally, is a great guy, never a hater.

Alright. Its really not cool to bash on Dan. He’s a really awesome guy personally, and the rest of the band are wonderful live. I agree that Standing in the way of control wasn’t all that great, but they have plenty of good songs like Take it or Leave it. Erik, Bob, Terry, Ross, and Dan worked hard and they’ve been getting what they deserve.

daaaaamn. these posts are funny. especially since most of them consist of people who probably only have motivation to bash people who are actually working hard to make a living in music and a good living at that, might i add, while they are sending posts to some website from their usual spot… the computer. oh yea and being someone who knows pretty much all that’s goin on in yl’s agenda, since i am a nameless loved one of one of the nameless band members, i think i’d know. everyone in the band is talented, genuinely nice and deeply care about their fans. they make time out of their lives to make others feel better. musically, physically, mentally. people using negative actions towards people because they are doing something positive? cool. we aren’t all the same. we all like different things. if you don’t like the music, cool. keep it to yourself. don’t act like dan’s gonna be working in a coffee shop or that he’s not gonna succeed. he already has. he obviously got enough hype from his stuff for you fools to find out so you could hate on it. oh and from basically every person i’ve talked to about album sales, they’ve sold out or only have one left everywhere. the albums only been out for a little over a month now? yea. good call on those used bins.

I love Young Love’s music.
& It better not die out in a couple of years.
They are already recording a second CD.
(which should be amazing)
Young Love is amazing. No matter what the haters say.

my old band used to play shows with the recover guys all the time, they were great for a while… then they got a contract and spent all their money on cocaine, and didn’t realize that the money stops coming once you owe your label thousands of dollars. last time I saw dan he was doing coke in the bathroom at beauty bar in austin. sucks.
