Sally Shapiro

November 30th, 2006

Ohemmgee. Things just keep getting better and better in the world of Sally Shapiro. I’m starting to feel like the Sally Shapiro fan club here but… how can I resist the urge to post tracks this good? Dyylan’s remix is like total icing on the cake. I didn’t believe “Anorak Christmas” could be any sweeter [...]

Modular Does LA

Modular Does LA

I have a pair of tickets to give away to the Modular Party in L.A. on December 6th. I’m not sure our L.A. demographic, but if you want to win send me an email by Friday, December 1st. I’ll pick a lucky random winner. Make sure the subject line reads “Modular Tix contest”, or I [...]

Thieves Like Us

Thieves Like Us

November 27th, 2006

Maybe this is the point — maybe — but if New Order’s “Thieves Like Us” was to transform from song shape to band shape then a-ha: Thieves Like Us would be it. I only assume the band must be named after the New Order song, and if so we all know that is dangerous, dangerous [...]

Poney Poney

Poney Poney

November 24th, 2006

All of the Thanksgiving feasting has fried my brain. So I don’t have anything smart or clever or even anything stupid to say about this track. Except: I have listened to Poney Poney’s “Junior” about five billion times, and I could probably listen to this track about five billion more times.
I’m not much of [...]

Best of 2006

November 22nd, 2006

I was going to do one of those tacky blogger Best of 2006 lists. But. Really. They’re lame, and I hate making lists.
So I’m going to leave it up to you guys, my faithful and not so faithful visitors, to make a list for BIGSTEREO. We’re going to do this in two steps. You’ll [...]

NYPC + Bang Gang

NYPC + Bang Gang

November 18th, 2006

Just in time for the weekend: Bang Gang remix of “Ice Cream”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For whatever short sighted reason this mix was rejected by Modular. Wtf, right? It is certainly the most interesting mix so far of New Young Pony Club’s “Ice Cream.” Right up there with Van She and DJ Mehdi — in many ways better [...]

The OC

November 17th, 2006

Is The OC played out? Whatever, covers are such the guilty pleasure. The latest mix from The OC is just that — a collection of cover tracks. I’m not sure how much this playlist will stand on its own once the novelty wears off, but take it for a spin. OC Mix 6: Covering Our [...]

Curtis Vodka

November 17th, 2006

Curtis Vodka – “Diamonds and Cream” (YouTube)
The video is a remix of classic Bond. Curtis Vodka’s “Diamonds and Cream” off of Yeti Bounce is of course a trashed up version of Shirley Bassey’s bond theme “Diamonds Are Forever.”
And. I was official tired of S.O.V. until I heard Vodka’s “Love Me Or Hate Me” mix. Nice.

Black Ghosts + Teenagers

November 16th, 2006

It is still too early to declare a winner, but The Teenagers are leading the way as the band to watch out for in ‘07 as picked by you guys in our little survey. So much hype over this band right now and with good reason.
I posted the original version of The Black Ghosts’ “Face” [...]

Kitsuné Maison Three

Kitsuné Maison Three

November 15th, 2006

Oh boy. Kitsuné Maison Compilation 3 is coming November 27th, and the tracklisting is killer as expected. Kitsuné never fails to impress: great track selection, excellent cover art, always the sound of now. Really, they don’t have their finger on the pulse because they are the pulse. If it is the hottest song from the [...]

SoftLightes

November 10th, 2006

SoftLightes – “Heart Made Of Sound” (YouTube)
“Heart Made Of Sound” is not as perfect as “Girlkillsbear” so I’m a bit puzzled by the video choice. But eh, the SoftLightes create such addictive pop it doesn’t really matter.
Ha, stop action is so cool…

Steed Lord

Steed Lord

November 10th, 2006

Oh Steed Lord, where have you been hiding my entire life? The band looks like they could be Vanilla Ice’s back up dancers… the music, which hints at early 90’s house and embraces crunk, doesn’t seem that far detached from the era either. The most amazing and refreshing part is it seems genuine without a [...]

Max Steele and The Party Ice

November 9th, 2006

OK. This track is total demo quality, but there is something quite inspired about Max Steele and The Party Ice’s “Pick-axe and Shovel.” Max Steele sounds something like a cross between The Somnambulants and The Postal Service… sigh, I never tire of diy pop music like this. Their other track are a little too saturated [...]

Some of you were climbing the walls for Spektrum’s “Don’t Be Shy” — well if you haven’t laid your hands on the mp3 yet, it is the free download of the week on iTunes for U.S. customers.
The fun doesn’t stop there. Their new album, Fun At the Gymkhana Club, was released digitally today.

The Ghosts

November 7th, 2006

Hot damn. Daniel Boud suspects The Ghosts are going to be big, and I am willing to bet he’s on the mark. It’s not often that after hearing only one song (a demo at that!) that I am totally head over heals for a band. But there is something totally special about The Ghosts.
I don’t [...]
