J*Davey

Woah, J*Davey is one of those suggestions that hits hard… like “how did I miss this one?” On a totally obvious superficial level they remind me of Kudu — but, um, better — or even Erykah Badu or Bahamadia. Lead singer Jack Davey has a similar vocal style that you’ll recognize. But she’s taken it up to another level: sexier, cooler, hotter, jammier. Jammier?

You might recognize “Dirty Love” as a Frank Zappa cover. J*Davey recreates it hot… like into some kind of dirty R&B dance track that would have Prince jealous.

Totally (totally) hot video for “Mister, Mister”

  1. I Knew you’d dig it! Too bad you can’t listen to all of their shit because they are re-working the website but they had all their music on it. I got ahold of it all on disc and saw them live where they sold a shorter version of my bootleg copy.

    Anywhoo they are great!

I’d be happy to send you more of their music if you’d like.

  2. Wicked !

  3. This song is pretty old, but always a great song from them. Love J*Davey…..if you’ve got more clearer versions of their stuff it’ll be cool if you can post it though. 1

  4. Yo, Bri (aka Jack Davey) been pumpin fo a long time. First as the designated dancer/rapper/crooner in Doin’ Everythang Funky. She was only nine years old - tearing it up with The Boys, TrakMasters, Aaron Hall, and Chante’ Moore among other acts at MCA Records. Her mentor, the late Louil Silas, taught her a relentless/spiritual commitment to makin’ it happen in the lab. So it’s no wonder that she is famous for blending spontaneity and fever with discipline and emotion to make unique sounds and stimulation.

Plus even before that in St. Louis where she was born, she was diggin’ Miles and Trane and Monk and Billie and Sun Ra and P-Funk and Nina Simone and Shuggie Otis and Duke and Count and Prince and Ornette Coleman and Phyllis Hyman and The Whispers and Cecil Taylor and Marvin Gaye and Katherine Dunham and Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder and Jimi and Janis and The Last Poets and Casandra Wilson and Carmen McRae and Urszula Dudziak and Weather Report and all at her Grandpop’s crib in the projects… Damn, she had a PhD in Music History by the time she was five! So, creatively her interests, influences, and intentions are broad and deep in the game.

Is she a dancer? Is she an actress? Is she a model? Is she a divette? Yes!!! When Jack met Katherine Dunham as a wide-eyed 6 year old, the Grand Diva/VooDoo High Priestess clutched her hand and said, “There is rhythm and music in your blood river, Sugar. Let it flow…” Since then baby girl has been on a mission; almost living in a trance becoming who she is meant to be. Who she has to be.

But above all else Jack is the future of Jazz/fusion/rock/funk/spoken word music. There are rhythms and readings, melodies and mockery, symphonies and cacophony that are slowly spiraling skyward from her soul to the heavens. Prepare to be shocked and amazed. Like Ra taught her: Space is da place. Let’s pray that the suits at Warner Bros. are smart enough to give her just that: SPACE. Stay tuned…

  14. J*davey rocks but iam surprised by everybody’s forgetfulness.

They sound like Kelis period. This is just another Kelis and pharell…reworked

  15. Kelis isn’t that brave. obviously you haven’t heard more of their work. They aren’t confined to one genre. they mix, and perfect genres to fit their personality. That’s genious. I produce and engineer, and the hardest thing for someone that makes music to do is make music that pleases themselves equally as it pleases the masses, and they do it with perfection.

  16. yo! my sister got this blogspot thinger ashelykaizan.blogspot.com and i just clicked on an ad! I didnt know it would take me to this… and um yea these people are BETTER than Kelis… where is she at? with Nas somewhere?..lol the viddeo is original and HOT
