Planningtorock feels like the love child of Matthew Barney and Bjork… but like all grown up. I’m not saying that visually Planningtorock (aka Janine Rostron) reminds me much of Matthew Barney. Her music doesn’t remind me much of Bjork either. But there is a master of art and free spirit link there: I imagine them all dressing up in cardboard outfits together and then making up fake accents or something else clever like that.
Planningtorock music and art seems totally intertwined, but I must admit I am drawn more to her visual work than her music. On her video page, Planningtorock has some totally mesmerizing kaleidoscope video work that should not be missed. Actually, after watching her video work, Planningtorock’s album, Have It All, begins to make a bit more sense. Planningtorock’s music actually sounds like a kaleidoscope… like it all melts and twirls together into an electronic masterpiece.
Planningtorock will be touring with Peaches across Europe this September and October. She will also be the opening act for the Knife’s U.S. mini-tour this fall.

Planningtorock is also on Chloé and Ivan Smagghe new Kill the DJ mix, The Dysfunctional Family. The tracklisting looks like it should get your head thinking. Put it on your to do list.

As if I wasn’t already excited enough about seeing the Knife. You just made my day.

CALLING ALL BANDS! We just launched Rockworks http://www.rockworks.us/showcase Showcase, an online battle of the bands type of competition. We’re looking for the best band in America. Maybe it’s you?
So here’s the scoop: four finalists of the online competition will perform LIVE at CMJ Music Marathon in NYC. We’re flying them out, putting them up, and letting them rock out at CMJ for an audience of music industry A&R, studios, labels, managers and celebrities.
All proceeds from the Rockworks Showcase will benefit our Gulf Coast [re]Build program. Right now, we’re working to restore the community of Forest Heights, MS—starting with a Boys & Girls Club Hope Center designed by Daniel Libeskind (the master architect who has designed the rebuild of the World Trade Center).
If you love music like we do, and want the chance of a lifetime, register your band at http://www.rockworks.us/showcase. Then, tell everyone you know to go there too, and nominate you to play at CMJ. It costs a mere dollar to nominate a band, but for us those dollars add up. We’re hoping to raise a million dollars, one dollar at a time.
So, get started today on the road to CMJ glory, and help Forest Heights on the road to recovery. Tell everyone you know to get played on Rockworks Showcase. Can’t wait to catch your act!
