New Young Pony Club
12 August 2006 :: posted by TravisNew Young Pony Club recently got the full video treatment for their classic “Ice Cream.” Listen closely nerds. I believe this is a minor edit from the 12″ version we all already know and love. So happy to see this band signed to Modular. Is it an understatement to say that we expect big things?
Speaking of Ponies: Head over to The Prettiest Pony to check out the newest Simian Mobile Disco. “Tits and Acid” is a hot jam.

Well for sure there’s some new vocals at the end, but isn’t everything re-edited? It sounds like the synth is more dry and the guitars are a little sharper. Or is it the fact that I can’t play the sound of this video trough my airport to my stereo?

These kids are HOT! First heard them in a club in Miami, and was turned on by the lyrics.
Hope they come to Miami…. sometime.

Well they have a myspace now. http://www.myspace.com/newyoungponyclub
It has all of their upcoming tourdates. I wish they would tour the US. I love this trend of modern disco. Shiny Toy Guns is another good band too.

hi
i just wrote an unfavourable review.
are my 26 years making me too old?
Do i not know how to have fun?
it all seems so forgettable and opportunistic, with little to offer.
The New Young Pony Club – EP (Modular)
Here comes another one just like the other ones. A derivative 3 track EP that draws from the dance-meets-rock success of pioneers such as DFA and The Rapture, and the over-sexed vacuousness of electro-vixen Peaches. Clangy guitars, synthesisers, and simple beats back up droll lyrics themed around hedonistic pleasures seeking. The insipidly named New Young Pony Club embrace image and aesthetic over depth and substance, which is sure to make them a hit with the Myspace generation, voraciously hungry for anything new, cool and really, really good looking.
The 5-piece group hails from London, but sound like they’re from nowhere. Singing with an American accent, the accidentally universal lyrical language, the band are a product of a globalised surface sound that ignores its cultural roots in order to be translatable, and marketable, across borders. While this could lead to in an exploration of profound fundamental human truths that unite us and transcend bigotry and cultural idiosyncrasy, the New Young Pony Club in superficial ditties about lust driven attraction and sexual servitude dressed up as sassy empowerment.
Oops, I have just fallen into the trap of taken it too seriously. It’s all about image and aesthetic, where emptiness is delivered with a knowing irony that states, “We are smarter than this but we enjoy being dumbâ€. An escape clause from critical scrutiny which makes any reviewer who tries to look too closely for artistic or cultural depth seem idiotic, humourless and sad.
In this sense, the New Young Pony Club is a direct descendant of the pop art revolution of the 1960’s. A valid approach, but one that lack its original relevance, and makes one wonder whether bands like the New Young Pony Club are even aware of their position with this cultural playground. Perhaps the blank-faced irony of this joke has become a closed aesthetic, an excessive folly, which has reduced some into a slavish embrace of its narrow paradigm and diminished their ability to articulate outside it. As in the Neverending Story, ‘the nothing’ has dissolved imagination, and the ability to express deep ideas and subscribe to arguments with passionate conviction has become a distant, and often maligned, memory.
Maybe I’m just over it and decoys like the New Young Pony Club still provide an enthralling diversion from the sober bondage of day to day living for many. In which case check out the drool enducing Video clip of Ice-cream and enjoy posing in your oxygen depriving tight blacks or yawn inducing 50’s polka dot dresses.

i’m older than you so i guess you just don’t know how to have fun.
seriously though… you’re reading way too much into it. music can be fun just for the sake of being fun.
and dfa, the rapture and peaches… eh… nypc has more in common with the tom tom club than any of those bands.

I’m 49 but not too old to enjoy some new tunage with retro sounds, fun lyrics and a good, dancable beat.
Heck, “Ice Cream” is good enough for Intel to use in their TV commercials to hawk the Core2 Duo processors!
There’s a lot of cool, new music out there and it DOESN’T have to be complex to qualify as good. This is fun to listen to. And for you critic types: that’s ALL that matters!

Yeah,
i am all pleasure seeking abandon, but i would say having fun is all that matters. its important, but to embrace only that is myopic is signals a worrying trend of depoliticised individualism. we can solve the worlds problems by just having fun, i don’t care what you have heard.
Thanks for the comment travis and others.
