Cansei De Ser Sexy

Shiz. I’m totally late on this one. But better late than never? Not that CSS really needs more blog love. I’ve actually had my blinders up because I was just reading way too much hype surounding this band. Too much hype is such a turn-off. But. CSS is one of those rare bands that is actually hype worthy.

Sure, Cansei De Ser Sexy might reek of hipster with song titles like “Art Bitch” and “Let’s Make Love And Listen To Death From Above,” but it’s the quality of the tracks that make this all work. Behind the style, the music actually has substance. It stands on its own. Call it whatever you like… epic? Cansei De Ser Sexy is pop that’ll punch you hard.

I’ll be the first to admit that I can be a tad zealous and a bit of a fanboy. But. One thing I don’t throw around all too often is album of the year. That’s like serious business. I can say with a straight face that Cansei De Ser Sexy has taken the top spot. This is the album I’ve been waiting for all year, and I didn’t even know it. Even with five months left of the year, it’ll be pretty tough to knock this off the top of the list.

CSS played at Black Cat last night. I went with several friends and almost none of them liked the band. One friend even called it trash.

I however thought it was amazing and wish there were more bands out there right now like CSS. They completely let go on stage and aren’t worried about how they sound in the mic, spitting water into the crowd, stage diving. Not to mention their clothes are fantastic. I’m so tired of the edgy indie rock outfits, skinny ties and crooner front singers. It finally feels like the wild energy of punk rock may be coming back. People have been categorizing this group as electro-rock but they are most definitely a pop punk band.

Bonde Do Role was also fun but it was due to their infectious energy not the music, which was basically Portuguese vocals over loosely remixed classic rock songs like Alice in Chains, “Man in the Box,” something by ACDC as well as the Beastie Boys’ “Check It Out.”
