Feist

Bitch Lap Lap aka FeistWell, well. The artist formally known as Bitch Lap Lap. I have never been totally sold on Feist. Lovely voice. Interesting friends. But it feels like she plays it safe way too often. I find myself wishing and waiting for whatever inspired Bitch Lap Lap to wear hot pink spandex pants. Unfortunately, this is not found on Open Season, Feist’s remix and b-side collection.

Open Season, like many remix collections, works best a la carte. Perhaps since Leslie Feist’s career is still quite young, this never really works or flows as an album. Feist has not created enough or been remixed enough for it to work that way.

It’s a collection, yes. But I’m not sure how many remixes of “Mushaboom” we really need. I’m a lover of remixes, but none on Open Season ever catch up to the original genius of “Mushaboom.” Sometimes great songs should just be left alone… even by talented people like Mocky, K-os, Gonzales and the Postal Service.

“Lovertits” is of course a remake of the classic Teaches of Peaches’ track. Originally the Leslie Feist and Gonzales version was a duet found on Gonzales’ stellar 2003 album, Z. On Z it made sense… on Open Season it feels a little bit on the outs. Still, it’s totally unavoidable.

Waiting to release this collection after another album or two would have left room to edit and make different choices. Open Season had potential to not only be a great collection but also a great album.
