Federation + E-40

No matter how many times it’s done, I will never tire of artists sampling or remaking Corey Hart’s “Sunglasses At Night.” Hart’s classic was the ultimate bad ass fashion statement. And the quintessential 80′s attitude that has been able to cross generations and genres.
Tiga’s now classic electro cover in 2001 was filled with both nostalgia and irony… made for a lost generation of club goers who used 80′s fashion to mock the late 90′s pop craze. While Corey Hart may have been sincere, Tiga felt anything but. Like Hart wants the listener to believe in what he is singing. Tiga is rolling his eyes. He is totally detached from the lyrics he is singing.
Enter Federation and E-40. Flow, style, whatever… I am always more interested in how the track will sound at the party. And in this case, I’m more interested in the way they’ve sampled Hart’s pulsing synth. It seems to fit perfectly… though I must say the first 40 seconds of the track is about as interesting as it gets. After that I’m a little tired. Of course, I cannot say I’m a total rap aficionado. Bottom line: I’m not sure this track will work far past the “oh ha ha… they sampled Corey Hart.” Though maybe I’m wrong. Rap artists have made careers on sampling blander tracks.
Unlike Tiga, this track still seems to be all about style. It still seems to be about being a bad ass. Federation and E-40 have taken Hart’s track and updated it for now. Tiga’s irony never enters this version.
So who’s gonna make the ultimate mash-up? Make my head hurt.
