WhoMadeWho

WhoMadeWho recently released The Green Versions, a re-working of their 2005 debut album. Instead of creating new wave inspired disco punk tracks, they have stripped their songs down to the bare essentials. A little folk, a little country… the songs still float on their excellent song writing capabilites and the fact that WhoMadeWho is a band made of top notch musicians.

Perhaps an album like this is a bit of a risky move since it could alienate fans with closed minds… of course The Green Versions could attrack a whole new set of (confused?) fans. Whatever. It’s about the music, right? I always find it strange when people take issue wit an artist radically who shifts their sound.

Their gimicky cover of “Satisfaction” is missing this time around, and is replace by the track “Manuelle Mittelwelle.” Of all WhoMadeWho’s tracks, an acoustic folk rendition of “Satisfaction” might have been the most interesting… certainly more interesting than their original disco-punk cover of the Benny Benassi club hit.

My favorite, “Space For Rent”, is recreated sounding very Beck-ish… like some laid back Space Rock. Still, many of the same elements of the original track are used, but The Green Version sounds warped and ready for a summer day. Also, it seems like the lyrics are more important on this version. They’re pushed to the front like they need to be heard.

The Green Versions is totally limited edition. So, I guess I’d advice getting in now instead of later.
