Puffy AmiYumi

Forgive me but my Puffy AmiYumi knowledge is a bit limited. They’re a cartoon? J-pop… what? Eh…
Whatever. Puffy AmiYumi’s “Call Me What You Like”, the opening track off of their newest disc Splurge, totally wins for one reason… the following lyrics: “We ain’t no Harajuku Girls. B-A-N-A-N-A-S.” Watch out for that volley, Gwen. Even though Splurge is like pop overkill, its lyrics and production are often brilliant. Puffy AmiYumi is proof that Top 40 can still be sassy even when it’s not dumbed down for the masses.

Plus, the whole surfer guitar thing in “Call Me What You Like” is way totally cool… like in a clean, not dirty Electrocute type way.
Splurge is out on Tofu Records July 25. It includes the USA exclusive Polysics remix of the Teen Titans theme song… which my three year old son thinks is the greatest track ever.

puffy ami yumi is a bit of a has-been j-pop duo. they had some success here a while back, but i don’t think they’re very popular any more. i find it hard to believe that they were exported to the u.s.a. in an attempt to boost their popularity, but that’s what i’ve heard.
i always thought they did okay bubblegum pop stuff, if you’re into j-pop. haven’t heard their stuff for years, so thanks for putting that new .mp3 up!

i think they got a style…(seems every japanese got a style) i’ve ever listened to some songs in their previous Japanese album…It’s so JPOP and unigue… but like Nik said..now they’re not that popular anymore…
i like this new single anyway, but in the other land i feel it’s also sound like ashlee simpson HAHA
thanks for update
bytheway i love your site…^^

It’s a bit different to most of what I’ve heard of theirs, but then most of what I’ve heard is older and in Japanese. My favourite thing to do with Puffy AmiYumi is pick out all the similarities to other songs in their songs. Man, is ‘Call Me What You Like’ the jackpot! In the first thirty seconds or so it references Boomtown Rats’ “I Don’t Like Mondays”, The Offspring’s “Pretty Fly For A White Guy”, Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and The Knack’s “My Sharona”. Add in the Hollaback Girl reference and you’ve got 5 in one song, not a bad effort.

Nik:
You’re not quite right on their current status in Japan. They just haven’t had an album of new material in three years, but in the run-up to Splurge they have been absolutely everywhere. They even had an entire 10th anniversary TV special devoted solely to them, and they’ve been on pretty much every major talk and variety show lately. They are still huge. I doubt Splurge will debut at #1 but it will easily crack the top 20.
Also, they would probably punch you if you called them j-pop to their faces. They were formed specifically as the *anti* j-pop - in the same spirit (if not the same type of music) as a creation like the Sex Pistols. The Japanese take on rock music is a little different, but they are a rock act (they don’t like being labeled “j-rock” either). If you look at the list of songwriters and collaborators on Splurge, it’s like a who’s who of western rock and punk music. Andy Sturmer (one of their longtime producers), Dexter Holland, Butch Walker, Jon Spencer, Charley Drayton, and of course the cover of Green Day’s Basket Case. But there are a lot of Japanese rock musicians on there too, including Tamio Okuda, their original producer.
It’s extremely rare for any Japanese musical act to stay around for ten years or more - you don’t get to that point by putting out bubblegum pop.

according to the oricon charts (japanese charts), splurge debuted at #12 on it’s first day.
again, pretty good for a band who’ve been around for ten years.

I just saw these guys live in Detroit… They totally ripped it up! I was blown away! Oh yes, and let’s just say that I’m in my late 30’s and have been to quite a few concerts in my time. The band is top-shelf all the way and really knows how to entertain. They had the whole place jumping - even the skeptics hanging out on the sides were totally into by the second tune.
The new album is rockin’! They have a knack for creating infectious hooks. It was a great listen the first time through and just keeps getting better.

A few things about Puffy that make them fascinating: they seem very sweet and polite in person, they totally rock on stage, and they have a wacky, deadpan sense of comedy. Mention should be made of their sense of musicianship, they can sing a jazz ballad, retropop, country, rock, punk, and always sound convincing and musical. That’s very difficult to pull off; most singers don’t have that kind of range. I think they’re very special. Plus they’re so damn cute!

(Yes, this is two months late, but…) Well, their earlier stuff’s better, IMO. Check out the music video of their debut single, I posted an entry about it here.
