MOTOR

With MOTOR’s Klunk, Mr. No and Bryan Black bring us their first “solo” effort. Everything that I loved about Mr. No and Bryan Black’s previous project, XLOVER, is gone: Nina Rai, pop, Nina Rai, hot vocals, Nina Rai and Nina Rai.

After listening to Klunk, I have yet to be totally woo’d — Not that Klunk doesn’t have some shining moments and stand-out tracks. MOTOR puts out a very solid release deserving a buy and listen. Experience in play, there’s no doubt that MOTOR’s production is ace, and the industrial vs. electro vs. tech sound is on par with what you would expect. But. That’s the problem. It is what we have come to expect, and there are very few suprising moments. Everything that is charming and gripping about Mr. No and Bryan Black’s previous production work is missing. Perhaps, in this case, it is the lack of anything human. It’s not that I need vocals to enjoy dance, but with MOTOR’s Klunk it wouldn’t have hurt.

I’m not going to lie though. If you like your dance music dark and rough, then MOTOR’s Klunk is for you. There is no doubt that Klunk is a very solid release. Great as an album, amazing in small doses… Klunk hits stores in the USA on July 25th. Just in time to get all hot and sweaty on the dance floor.
