Hm, I think you're on to something. But… I don't think the Gossip's success has been limited (or advanced) by their sexuality. In fact, I'd argue that their sexuality has actually helped them. The last show Gossip show I went to had a HUGE lesbian audience... compared to shows in 2000-01 that wasn't so much the case (at least from my experience). It seems like they've become a hot gay buzz band... which has probably only contributed to their success. I just feel like their sexuality hasn't really come into play until SITWOC... or maybe I'm just dense.

SITWOC is the more accessible record they have released in their career… which is why I think they have seen a lot of recent success and new fans. Also, there has been a bigger push in Europe and the UK with this album (new record deals, distribution, marketing, etc)…

There have been other recent queer bands that have had a lot of early success… so I don't think your argument holds water. Just look at Le Tigre… they had early success with similar DIY ethics. Their sexuality didn't prohibit them from signing with Universal or stop the success of their early records.

This is just 100% speculation. But I feel like The Gossip has held back a little bit. Like their art and music is more important than commercial success. I don't know, but I'm willing to guess they've had major record label offers… I speculate that they have chosen to stick to their indie roots. I'm sure if they signed you'd see the same success rate as the YYYs or The White Stripes or whoever.

Whatever the case, they're catapulting. I agree 100% with your second paragraph. I've brought many friends to their shows over the years who were not fans going in. And they always leave blown away.

Woah. Long response.

happening right now?

the gossip has been happening for a while babe. Personally, I think there's a few... cultural (cough, homophobic, cough) reasons for why they haven't made as much of a mainstream break as similar bands have.. (For ex: The YYY's..)

However, I think that there's a certain beauty in the face that the gossip are truly DIY. Seriously, without fail, everyone I expose to them loves them. They played this one show at the knitting factory in NYC at 12:00 am in the morning and it sold out weeks in advance. There's obviously something there, and I hope that a lot of people can overlook their personal biases because a band like this truly can't be ignored for long.

Cheers for the track. The Gossip seem to be making strides (or at least baby steps!) in the UK music scene and all.
