Nelly Furtado + Gnarls Barkley
31 May 2006 :: posted by Travis
Omg. Forget for a moment that Thom Yorke leaked all over the internerd today. What is about pop stars covering other pop stars that makes my heart go wild? Nelly Furtado did an acoustic cover of Gnarls Barkley’s international hit “Crazy” on BBC Jo Whiley’s Live Lounge. This is one of those instant classic live moments… really more Folklore than “Maneater”. Two of pop’s biggest collide. Oh that Nelly!

Listen to and stream the full interview here… plus an acoustic version of “Maneater.”

That cover is absolutely brilliant!!! Gave me chills.

Nelly Furtado singt Gnarls Barkely…

wow - what an awesome cover! hauntingly beautiful :P
June 1st, 2006 at 5.06 am
yes, yes, yes… the song fits her perfectly!
June 1st, 2006 at 8.49 am
Are you guys deaf or perhaps ‘crazy’ - that was by far the worst cover of that song out there - even worse than the kooks awful version - rubbish rubbish rubbish
June 1st, 2006 at 9.50 am
I like the Kooks version. Don’t you appreciate the irony in a group called “Kooks” covering a song called “Crazy”. I’m just waiting for the versions by Madness, Looney Toones and Insane Clown Posse.
June 1st, 2006 at 5.18 pm
Wow she’s totally slipping off. She did a great job of de-funking that tune.
June 1st, 2006 at 5.56 pm
Hate all you want…she’s living her dream; if you ain’t feeling it then turn it off.
Roll-On Nelly.
Vancity stand-up!
June 1st, 2006 at 11.48 pm
bad cover. I think she tried too much to add levels to the song
June 2nd, 2006 at 4.11 am
that was crazy in a bad way!!!! and by the way chay who doesnt like the kooks cover i would have 2 dissagree i fink its awesome!!!!!! but go nelly for trying xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
June 2nd, 2006 at 8.36 am
It’s not entirely bad, but the original is so much better. Conclusion: an unnecessary cover.
June 2nd, 2006 at 9.40 am
What made it so bad? I like the original and I like this version.
I think she did a pretty damn good job, meself.
June 3rd, 2006 at 4.24 am
Her version’s got no soul. Sure it’s haunting in its own Nelly Furtado way, but when you listen to Gnarls’ version and hers, she takes what was a really original, strangely appealing, funky, soulful tune and turns it into a flaccid, generic reworking. What she gives to the song is not commesurate with what her version lacks, as compared with the original.
She’s got that distinct lilt in her voice which does give the song a little something, but on the whole I think it’s a cover that didn’t need to be made. She’s a capable singer/songwriter, but she did a mediocre job on this song. So it goes; no one bats a thousand every time.
June 3rd, 2006 at 5.38 am
Horrible. She ruins this amazing song. Way too fast. No feeling. It is a damn shame. Be amazed, watch the live videos of Gnarls on top of the pop or conan o’brien. That will move you. This is just discusting.
June 3rd, 2006 at 7.24 am
Really good for a live performance.
June 3rd, 2006 at 9.16 am
i think people are forgetting that this is a one time, live radio recording with little rehearsal. comparing it to the original version is a fallacy…
obviously gnarls barkley’s version is going to have a lot more depth: it was recorded in a studio, access to lots of instruments, multiple takes, etc.
June 3rd, 2006 at 10.11 am
crap.
June 3rd, 2006 at 10.27 am
nice.
June 3rd, 2006 at 12.21 pm
Not very good, especially compared to the live versions.

$imply $tunning!!!
June 3rd, 2006 at 8.40 pm
I love her. Oh, so much.
June 3rd, 2006 at 9.00 pm
Okay, hands up who’s listened to Gnarls’ album? Could it be any worse? Crazy is the only song that’s worth listening to. Produced to the max and with no other song that grabs you, the guy got lucky.
This version is ace, in my opinion.
June 3rd, 2006 at 9.02 pm
The rest of the album has no bearing on the quality of the tune, or of this rendition of it. Just FYI.
June 4th, 2006 at 12.31 am
[...] Following my paean to Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy,” Waxy Links pointed me to this cover by Nelly Furtado. I respect her as a Portuguese sister. I like a few of her songs. I just never became a big fan. The cover reveals something about the music. This song stands on its own. It harkens back to the olden days when pop hits would be covered over and over by popular performers. That Gnarls Barkley songs are big production is no suprise. This one is also plain good. It is good enough for many interpretations. It should be the biggest song of summer 2006. [...]
June 4th, 2006 at 2.16 am
Wow…and not in a good way. I sounds like a reject from American Idol.
June 4th, 2006 at 11.24 am
she did an awesome job of covering that. I hate maneater but that cover was class. I salute you miss F
June 4th, 2006 at 6.04 pm
I approve of this. It gives Gnarls a little more credibility. Not that that they need it. But I wanna hear Gnarls on the radio, they could replace Sean Paul. Cuz he sucks.
June 4th, 2006 at 7.40 pm
Anyone thats thinks this cover is rubbish or ‘unnecessary’ is an idiot, theres no re-tuning in her performance, what you hear is a real voice not something thats been tampered with by computer to make it sound ‘good’. The original is terrible, I wish she’d done it first!
June 4th, 2006 at 8.21 pm
I think it starts bad, but man I think she did a great job. I’ve got more respect for the musicians though. Impressive acoustic interpretation!
June 5th, 2006 at 2.51 am
[...] BigStereo has an free mp3 of Nelly Furtado covering “Crazy” (from artist Gnarls Barkley). [...]
June 5th, 2006 at 6.56 pm
she needs to be curbstomped. when’s her acoustic version of “hung up” coming out? someone get her a ghettoblaster, a thong, and a change hat. only way she’ll ever deserve the attention.
June 6th, 2006 at 11.27 am
I enjoyed that. You know the song is a classic when a cover is made a little over a month after its release. (Same thing happened to “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Yesterday”)
June 6th, 2006 at 2.24 pm
Guys it’s just amazing! My sister just came back from school and she said me she heard that song. I went here i listened to it, and i can’t stop.
I loved all the Try thing. Now I think I gonna love it even more!
Her voice is so clear, there is barely no need for music,…
I’d say it is just perfect.
June 6th, 2006 at 3.32 pm
[...] Sticking with the pop music for a little bit. After I heard Nelly Furtado’s cover of Crazy (she looks incredible in that photo BTW) I found her recent performance of Maneater on Top of he Pops. So go check out her version of Crazy (which I love) and then check out the iPod video download of Nelly Furtado singing Maneater. (I like Promiscuous Girl better though.) [...]
June 7th, 2006 at 12.25 am
Guys,
I don’t mean to break up any of the nice words and fun conversation or anything, but I personally really hate this version. There’s no fun to it anymore. I agree: It sounds beautiful, but after listening to the actual song, this is horrible in comparison.
Just my $00.02
June 7th, 2006 at 9.26 am
Wow, I love Nelly Furtado…but not even she can make me like this ridiculously AWFUL song. Good Lord folks, this is the biggest piece of garbage song in the history of music. With that being said… Nelly still rocks!!! :)
June 7th, 2006 at 12.57 pm
gooosebumps all over
June 7th, 2006 at 2.40 pm
OMDzzz!!! I think this is absolutly brill!!! i loved the other acoustic version aswell but this one tops it compleat!!!!
ppl need to stop hating coz she does this song so well! the fact that it hasnt been ruined by computer crap and its just her (amazing) voice and live instraments is what compleats the song.
the real version just sounds like manufactured crap.
June 7th, 2006 at 11.37 pm
[...] This isn’t the first remake on the Gnarls Barkley track Crazy nor is it the best. In fact the best slow tempo version is probably their own from Top of the Pops. Nonetheless Nelly Furtado does a reasonable one-take, no-overdubs, live version that can be found here. It was recorded at the BBC for Jo Whiley’s Live Lounge. [...]
June 8th, 2006 at 2.10 am
BORING…..
It’s not her song…
Keep watching American Idol if you want to hear some rehashed gems.
She sucks all the soul from the orignal by not playing up the hook from the original which really all lies in the word “probably”… at the end she just speaks it spoken-word-poetry style. Lame.
June 8th, 2006 at 4.58 am
yadayadaaydaydyadyaydyadyaydyadyadyaydyaydyayadayadayadadyadayadayadad
June 8th, 2006 at 6.26 pm
Why should she do a “soul” version when the original is indeed so full of it? That would add nothing new to the song.
She did it her owen way with the little twists in her voice and breaking up the fases of the song - she did it fine. She have made a cool laid’ back version of it.
And American Idol… come on. They don’t make cover versions, you know, individually interpretations. They make copies - they desperatly try to sound so close to the original as possible, you know, unoriginal…
June 9th, 2006 at 7.11 am
i heard this live on the radio while i was driving and i nearly crashed the car cos i was fapping myself it was so good. i like it.
June 9th, 2006 at 2.33 pm
personally i think that nelly furtado should stick to her own kind of music this cover was rubbish!
its meant to be a bouncy song sung by a man
Forget it Nelly
June 9th, 2006 at 8.28 pm
The most haunting and amazing cover I’ve heard in a while is Ray LaMontagne’s cover of Crazy, just his powerful yet raspy, weathered voice and a guitar. It highlights the LYRICS of this song perfectly, which are really the most powerful part of it, I think (combined with the perfectly timed chord changes). If you want to know where to find it or can’t find it, ask me on this board (no emails please). It’s worth searching out. I sat with a coworker of mine in my office and we listened to it and teared up a bit at how powerful it was.
June 9th, 2006 at 9.22 pm
Kim wins!
Ray’s version can be heard at Motel de Moka.
June 10th, 2006 at 6.11 pm
This is the only song I have ever listened to that made me sit in my car after I got to where I was going until it was finished. If she released this as it is it would go straight to no.1 - absolute certainty.
June 10th, 2006 at 8.46 pm
that was a beautiful rendition of an already great song
June 12th, 2006 at 7.04 am
Great song, fantastic cover of an already well established classic. Well worth a listen. That’s going on my mp3!!
June 12th, 2006 at 7.04 am
total bollocks
June 12th, 2006 at 5.46 pm
Excellent piece of ART WORK. Muchas Feeling
June 12th, 2006 at 11.28 pm
This is balls. I thought Nelly Furtado was all right too, but she butchered it. This is a terrible cover. Stop ruining your career and rep canada right furtado.
Christ. CeeLo has the only cover that should be used with this song. Damn.
June 13th, 2006 at 1.25 am
You guys are nuts. That was awesome!! I’d love to hear an album of artists covering this song and I’d definitely put Nelly Furtado #1.
June 13th, 2006 at 6.44 am
I dont think you can blame nelly for a number of reason. First of all it was live and second the orignal song by gnarls barkley has too much heart and emotion in it. ps nelly wasnt that bad.
June 13th, 2006 at 6.55 am
im sorry but are you all DEAF! This cover is proper *MINT* im very proud of how Nellty has the diversity to come out with an amazing disco-happy tune like Maneater, but still has folk-soul in her cover of ‘Crazy’ I think its really good, PLUS THE KOOKS ARE AMAZING! i can’t believe anyone can not like their version of ‘Crazy’…..ummm what did u have in your ears at the time? Its HOT SHIT!!
June 13th, 2006 at 12.09 pm
Amazing!!!!! I cant get it out of my head!
June 13th, 2006 at 5.06 pm
very good excelent
June 13th, 2006 at 8.01 pm
I think the other version with Gnarls Barlkey by himself is WAY better. It sounds horrible.
June 13th, 2006 at 8.48 pm
I loathed it. I love Nelly normally, but I found it depressing not haunting. The Cee-Lo version really moved me, and I find the lyrics so thought provoking. I can’t deny that she has a great voice - just didn’t convey any emotion to me.

Couldnt have said it better myself… Nelly Furtado is a complete LOSER… She needs to see a shrink and find out just what the hell her TRUE identity is..
Id rather listen to my old chipmunks albums then her sausage infested greasy spewed crap she calls a voice out of her mouth ANYDAY!
peace im out…
word to ALL YOUR MOTHERS!
June 15th, 2006 at 5.11 pm
awful, it is just so blah. i wish she would go back into hibernation - this song rocks when gnarles sings it…..
June 16th, 2006 at 12.08 pm
well 4 me it`s great so much better and i wish her the best of the best y los malditos frijoleros que no les agrade pues q no la escuchen y ya!fuck u all!

I was wondering, what plugin that is to make the MP3s play?? Really cool. Thanks.
June 16th, 2006 at 11.25 pm
I think nelly gave Gnarls Barkley a bad name. She sucked in that song. Period.
June 17th, 2006 at 1.23 pm
wow.. this is an amazing cover… it should be a single =[.
June 18th, 2006 at 3.40 am
its alright but sum of the words are a bit, well………..arggghhhhh!!!!
does anyone agree with me??? i hope they do, she totally kinda ruined an upbeat funky song and turned it into a depressing gospel singers tune, i’ll tell ya wot, if she wos 2 sing it first, she would have never got to no. 1 and stayed there. i totally disagree with PHil, soz mate, but lol, nobody listens to that junk anymore, ok i like nelly but her songs suit her better than turning an innocent song into a beethoven classic. anyone agree with me????
June 18th, 2006 at 6.59 am
nothing beats ray lamontagne
June 18th, 2006 at 1.32 pm
Wow it’s amazing how people either seem to HATE or LOVE this song and/or Nelly Furtado. Either way she’s getting talked about :) Check out the full NF “Loose” album before you judge her style, you might change your tune. http://nelly-furtado.net
June 18th, 2006 at 1.35 pm
basically…that song doesnt fit her…the soul cee-lo conveys in the lyrics is hardly matched by nelly…she also ruins one of the best parts of the song (”haha, bless your soul”)
June 18th, 2006 at 6.52 pm
FYI: all of the gnarls barkley had time to perfect crazy talk….. Cee-Lo did it in ONE take. The FIRST take. do some research.
-[REMIX]
June 19th, 2006 at 5.11 am
I think this cover is great! and she chose a perfect time for doing it.. cuz now I’m starting to get tired of gnarlz barkleys version of crazy. great work!
June 19th, 2006 at 6.58 pm
Yes, Yes, Yes!!! I love it, it’s perfect just like the original, I wish it was included on Nelly’s new album. It adds a whole dimension to the already awesome song…you know she did well, if you’re hating stop it. Who today can sing that well, without any extra help…(I.e. add vocals, someone else actually singing the lead, while the artist perpetrates:D) Was that Timbaland doing the harmony…Whoever it was, keep doing your thing…LOL, NEWayz…I feel that the song doesn’t have the soul of the original…but it still has emotion…even more emotion than the original.
June 20th, 2006 at 1.02 am
ray lamontagne’s version is better…
& her talking bits are awful.
although this style is much better than her latest single.
June 20th, 2006 at 9.55 am
Bem feito Nelly! Acho-te grandiosa. Es uma Guapa e uma artista formidavel. Adoro-te! Boa sorte e continua assim, surpreende-nos com jóias musicais como esta. Um abraço do Alexander.

For the few retard losers who didn’t like the cover…don’t be idiots Nelly did an AWESOME job on this song. I heard it on the ready even before I heard the original and i fell in love with the song immediately. Nelly’s voice couldn’t have been any better and it was spontaneous and LIVE..try to get Britney Spears to sing live and sound as good. yeah right!!! Luv you Nelly!!!

the only thing that bugged me about this cover was whenever Nelly sang the second line of any verse she changed up the tune of the original, and i didnt like it. otherwise, her voice sounded great.

one word 4 it- crap! she destroys a great song.i like her normally but she went 2 far by butchering a totally great song!!!!!
July 2nd, 2006 at 6.15 pm
Nelly has no identity… She waits to see what the current popular style of music is, then she puts out music that sounds just like it! Her songs may have original Lyrics but her music has no originality! She can’t ever stick with something and work with it! As soon as the style of music she’s singing dies, she stops and waits for the newest craze and then she copy’s it.
July 2nd, 2006 at 6.16 pm
imagine that! it’s not like she’s a pop artist or something…
July 2nd, 2006 at 8.58 pm
Gnarls Barkley is not “that Guy”. They are two individuals who have been making classic hip hop music for years. (Cee-Lo of The Goodie MOB and DJ Danger Mouse) This is not the only good song on their album. It is however, arguably, the only palatable song on their album. Fans of good creative hip hop will like Gnarls Barkley’s album.
I am a huge Furtado fan. She could have done better on this song but it was good for one time shot.
July 2nd, 2006 at 9.02 pm
Russ, I thought Furtado’s first album was great. I don’t really see how she is copying any particular style. her second album seemed pretty original and from the heart, to me, too. (However, only two or three songs really get my attention on it.)
Her current album is more fitting to your description, admittedly. Anyone who gets Timbaland to produce their album is going right for the numbers game, at this point. Having said that, she still makes a respectable effort to maintain her own flavor. She just falls flat.
July 3rd, 2006 at 6.37 am
Thank you, Nelly. Thank you for raping my ears and ruining a fantastic song.
July 3rd, 2006 at 11.28 am

THIS A FLAWLESS AND EXTRAORDINARY PERFORMANCE!!!
WOW! in the good sense.
I was astonished by cristal-like clarity of her voce that goes straight to the heart.
Nelly, when I listen this song I fell like you are close to me!
July 4th, 2006 at 12.01 pm
July 4th, 2006 at 6.57 pm

July 9th, 2006 at 3.49 pm
Nelly did right by this wonderful haunting tune. Gnarls has a unique and unforgetable presentation, but Nelly’s version is like listening to this grand tune lingering on the wind. I love listening to it over and over again. I’m so greatful it is available on-line. Maybe others could lighten up and appreciate more and be less critical. The joven could be less Edward-sissor handed to creative endeavors and appreciate variety of life.

[...] When a song gets such ubiquitous popularity so quickly, there are bound to be covers. I side-blogged Nelly Furtado’s cover of Crazy a few weeks ago. But the cream of the imitation flattery crop has got to be this brilliant acoustic performance by Ray Lamontagne. (I am stunned sometimes when I look back through my archives and can’t find very important things that I know I PLANNED to blog. Ray Lamontagne is one of those. Stephanie and I fell in love with him at a live show where he played with only a guitar and mic. His debut album, Trouble, is brilliant, but in my opinion, over-produced. He is best with just a mic. This “Crazy” cover is Ray at his best. By the way, if anyone has an acoustic version of Ray singing “Jolene” I’d pay money for a copy.) [...]

Saw Nelly at Bluesfest, Ottawa. She made a fan out of me. Totally love her version of crazy. To the writer that mentions her ability to re-create herself; this is why she gets new fans on a daily basis. Have you ever heard her latin music? I only wish I would have won the tickets to watch ‘Live’ from the side of the stage with her!
Can’t wait to see her on Canadian Idol 17/07/06.
I love Maneater, too.

Go with it…Nelly made this great tune hers - and I loved it! Yes, the original is more fun, but Nelly’s is richer on many levels.

It wasn’t horrible, just average. I’ve seen better renditions at open-mic. What was with the spoken word? It wasn’t too cohesive in terms of melody and came across as improv

I think this re-mix is horrible!! I really like crazy (gnarlz barkley), but this one is… hmmmmm no coments!!

If you never heard Gnarls Barkley’s original version, you wouldn’t judge her cover so harshly. It’s an entirely different take on the song. I LOVE the original and this has its own merits too.

umm… in case no ones figured this out yet- nelly furtado cant sing. notice how her biggest single to date is involves her rapping. (poorly)
FORCA!
August 3rd, 2006 at 5.25 pm
Okay first to the girl who said Nelly Furtado can’t sing… you’re obviously an idiot, but let’s just assume that you haven’t listened to any of her songs, including the Crazy cover.
I can say one thing about her cover: it’s hypnotic. True, it’s not as soulful as the original, but it’s not lacking anything; it’s just different. And her smooth, beautiful voice on the instruments (live) singing these lyrics… its hypnotic, and simply beautiful, a piece of art. In general, both versions are incredibly good. Thank you.
Moses… and stop hating!!!

[...] Good enough that everyone and their mother is covering them. Including Texas, Mates of State, Ray Lamontagne, Nelly Furtado and The Snapsons. [...]
August 8th, 2006 at 1.14 am
This is one of the best covers I have ever heard. She is so much better when she sticks to singing with a guitar rather than shaking her ass with Timbaland. But maybe Im crazy- probably.
August 8th, 2006 at 12.15 pm
Worst thing I’ve heard since the Oscar Meyer Weiner song.
August 8th, 2006 at 3.25 pm
Nelly has a mightly hold on this male tune and sends it into another dimension. Notice it’s the guys so nay say this well done piece and oh, well, they can’t have it all. Well done, Nelly! Thank God for ya
