Sigur Ros
posted by TravisSigur Ros kicked off their tour last night at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine. I didn’t take any photos. When the State Theatre says a show starts at 7:30 they mean it. Bizzarre, right? They don’t mean 8:30 — and if you do arrive at 8:30 expect to sit in the very last row. Which is where I was sitting. Which is why I have no photos. The show was sold out, and there wasn’t an empty seat in the house.
I do have to say it was kind of nice just sitting back and relaxing to Sigur Ros’ beautiful soundscape and atmosphere. Opening act Amina joined them on stage and played strings. To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t much of a fan going into the show, but they’re undeniably a master of their craft. Watching, you can’t help but forget everything horrible in the world. They just take you to another place, world even. I’m not about to get all spiritual or anything, but watching them perform was like catching a glimse of God… or something. Something more than anyone can really understand.
Sitting far back was also great to really take in the stage lighting… which is something I wouldn’t have really been able to value closer to the stage. I’m not one to get into over dramatic staging, but it was well done.
Wait. Can we talk about something? Every single band I’ve ever seen perform from Iceland has had the same exact formula as far as live shows go. They always have a screen with weird organic images in the background. They always have dramatic stage lighting and strobe lights. They always have lots of smoke. It’s awe inspiring the first time. But I’ve seen the formula at least half a dozen times now, and I just don’t care. That is my only complaint. Well, not really a complaint, but something I’ve picked up on. Oh I love you Iceland.
Thank God I’m A Nutsack has a photo/review from the show and promises videos later this week.
Sigur Ros’ Takk is in stores.
