Justice + Sebastian
3 December 2005 :: posted by BIGSTEREOThis post is about one thing: Robot Rock. That said, let”™s continue.
Most people grow up in the periphery of big cities, not the city itself. But in the periphery, we often have to work harder to entertain ourselves. So when something big happens, as it usually doesn”™t, we all remember. For me, I remember being at a club in Tampa, Florida and hearing the cowbell intro to “House of Jealous Lovers” kick in “¦ and suddenly, everything changed. For the longest time, we of the periphery had only 80s nights. Then, years after New York, Chicago, San Francisco and DC, we had indie nights. Then, we had nights where something way too close to actual dance music made us want to actually dance. Suddenly, everyone was talking about The Warriors and something called No Wave.
Now, after a handful of good years with dance punk, it”™s time to move on “¦ fortunately, France presents us with something called Dirty House, or if you”™re into alliteration, Dirty Disco. To me, Dirty House seems like one of two things: the continuation of an identity crisis, or perhaps significant steps toward resolving that crisis. Either way, it seems nicely tucked in between Lightning Bolt and Daft Punk.
Here’s to big and small cities, big changes, and big, big robots with guitars.
Two examples:
1. Justice ““ “Waters of Nazareth” ““ Previously a duo, currently a foursome. One of the members being Pedro Winter, aka Busy P, the manager of Daft Punk, Cassius and several other French dance superstars. Other than heading up Headbangers Management, he runs Ed Banger Records., which released Justice”™s recent “Waters of Nazareth” ep. Trevor Jackson, of Output and Playgroup fame, says, “the new kings of distorted dancefloor. Better than excellent.” Tiga, of Tiga fame, says, “that Nazareth track is the bomb!”
2. Annie ““ “Without You (Sebastian Remix)” ““ Ed Bangin”™ brother to the Justice quadrangle, Sebastian likes his dance music loud, distorted and guitariffic. This track is one of the year”™s overlooked gems. Seriously. I”™m not sure if you”™re even ready. This is some next level shit.

WOW! Both those tunes are fuckin’ ace! Heard the Annie remix somewhere before but not sure where!

Thanks! Yeah, that whole scene, Ed Banger Records and Kitsune France, is so great that I find it hard to believe it hasn’t had more coverage. Spread the word! We need more exhibitionist guitars to get busy having sex with synthesizers on a much greater number of dancefloors.

that annie track is by no means some “next level shit”. It is sub-thrill kill cult. it is “old level poop”.

Sebastian is tearing floors up as well. Glad to hear others in France are picking up where Homework left off.
