DFA1979 + Chromeo
2 December 2005 :: posted by TravisIt is time to start Friday. This is the first official Death From Above 1979 post on bigstereo. I’m sure they’ve been mentioned in passing – and there have been one or two MSTRKRFT posts. But. Surprise, surprise: Not a single DFA1979 post.
This is the remix that was left off DFA1979’s Romance Bloody Romance: Remixes and B-sides, and I’m starting to think the Chromeo mix is a tad better than the Justice mix. Maybe. Justice is just so hot right now – it is hard to like anything more. But. Yeah, I am liking the Chromeo mix a hair more.
Listen: DFA1979 – “Blood On Our Hands” (Chromeo Mix) (mp3)
I’m going to admit that I don’t read Pitchfork all that often, but their review of DFA1979’s Romance Bloody Romance: Remixes and B-sides is worth mentioning. I agree that as an album this just doesn’t work, but then I don’t really think that is the point. This disc isn’t meant to work as an album. It’s a collection of Remixes and B-sides… not a replacement of You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine. Look, I understand the reviewer has issues with DFA1979 being remixed, but regardless there really are some stand outs on this disc. A .05 rating is just hitting below the belt. Really Pitchfork… don’t bite the hipster hand that feeds you. Le sigh.

wah! this came out of nowhere, how did i not know of the existence of this!? Not as good as the Justice remix but still brilliant – top marks BigStereo

I read the pitchfork review too and it really pissed me off. I bought the cd and I love it but maybe thats because I’m a dj. I don’t know.

Um, yeah … that review was wack to me, too. Who looks at a remix album as a cohesive whole? That’s kinda … stupid? For what it is … a series of remixes by the artists du jour, it’s actually pretty good. BUT. I am gonna argue that the Justice remix fucking dominates, because their sound is so close to DFA1979 anyway and it just meshes so well! It’s a perfect man/machine combo. Like the way the drum programming is done … it emulates some of the cheesy aspects of live drumming. Maybe I am giving Justice too much credit, but that remix is amazing. I’m not even a huge DFA1979 fan, but this remix made me think twice.

yeah the justice mix pretty much owns.. doesn’t it? and now that a couple days have passed i agree. the excitement of discovering the chromeo mix clouded by judgement a little – ha.
the review is stupid. the album itself clearly states that it is a collection of remixes and b-sides… not a remix album. but that’s what you get with you have indie rock kids reviewing anything that isn’t indie rock. whatever.
