Villeneuve
19 November 2005 :: posted by TravisWow. Nice surprise. I have a new favorite album. And it’s by French artist Villeneuve.
Villeneuve’s First Date is created by producer Villeneuve and singer Mélanie Pain. A little confusing – is Villeneuve the name of the “band” or is it just Villenuve with Mélanie Pain on vocals? Since most of the information out there is in French, I am having a hard time finding an answer. But they seem to work best as a duo – and First Date seems as though it is as much about Mélanie Pain as it is about Villeneuve.
Villeneuve’s First Date is one of those albums that will make both the indie rock and electro kids happy. It crosses the lines between Indie Rock, American Folk, and Electronic and Pop music. There are not too many albums out there that I feel like all my friends will like, but First Date has enough to please every audience. Villeneuve reminds me of The Postal Service, Imogen Heap , Air or Feist – at times. It’s cool and subtle, but does not rely on cheap tricks, nostalgia or fluff. There’s real substance here, and it makes for an amazing album.
Listen: Villeneuve – “Oh No” (mp3)
Of course, I pick the danciest song on the album which is not a very good representation of the album as a whole. It’s hard to find just one good example since they jump styles on a few of the tracks. Best bet is to stream the album below.
Stream: Villeneuve – First Date
And I’m telling you – if you only buy one album this month then Villeneuve’s First Date should be it. Trust me…

You’re right. This is really good. Tahiti 80-esque. I’ve been wondering who Benoit Villeneuve was ever since that M83 “Run Into Flowers” track! Now we know.

Just the sort of thing I was looking for. Excellent work, as usual. Thanks for posting.

If you like Villeneuve, you might like my friend Montag’s work. He is from Montreal and released two albums on Gooom; he also did the strings arrangements for M83 and remixed “Teen Angst”.

Varied sounds and feathery vocals? The Cardigans come to mind; this is not unlike some sort of band name game here. Cute.
