Carol Lynn Townes

Rchrd wants to have a jamm off? No? Well he brought Shannon. Which seems a little too predictable and obvious. So while we’re on predictable and obvious… Carol Lynn Townes.

Carol Lynn Townes’ only ‘hit’ was of course “99 ½”… which actually did chart on the R&B charts in 1984. “99½” was of course featured in the cinematic masterpiece Breakin’ which kept me captivated for hours as a child. Who am I fooling? Breakin’ still keeps me captivated. There is a certain amount of innocence found in both Carol Lynn Townes’ “99 ½” and Breakin’ that is missing in the real world.

Carol Lynn Townes - “99 ½”

Purchase: As far as I can tell, both Carol Lynn Townes and the Breakin’ Soundtrack seem to be out of print. You might be able to hunt some Townes down on various compilations. Or try Gemm.

  2. You guys are hilarious! I love this track!

  3. Breakin’ was an amazing movie but you also have to watch Breakin’ 2 Electric Boogaloo. Its so amazing and the song by Carol Lynne Townes is called Believe in the Beat. It is really catchy and gets stuck in your head. Watch the movies, become break dancers, and life will be good.

  4. Glad to see some other peeps are fans of Carol’s music! Interestingly, she actually started out in a mid-70’s soul group called Fifth Avenue, which briefly recorded for Buddha and RCA Records. Then, she suddenly reappeared in ‘84 with “99 1/2,” and followed up with two albums on Polydor. She actually did do a few more records after that, the last one I know of being “Midnight Confession” from 1993. I wonder what she’s up to now?
