I first heard Genders when they opened for Adult. way back in April at the Middle East in Boston. At the time, I wasn’t sure if they were a bad joke or if they were just way beyond my intellect. I’m still really not sure.

But I do know that five months later I am still thinking about them. So something must’ve stuck. And my brain is finally starting to make sense and process what I heard and saw.

At first glance, Genders seem like an unlikely band to open for Adult. Adult. is very hard, a defined line. There are no maybes with Adult. Genders, on the other hand, are murky. They’re grey and dirty and there are no yeses or nos… just in-betweens.

“Tenderswarm” is a perfect example of Genders’ abstract mess. The repetitive bass line is the only total coherent statement. Buried behind the bass is what seems to be random noises and vocals; none of it needing to make sense. It reminds me of being lost in the woods. Not that I have ever been lost in the woods. But if I was, I’m sure that is what it would sound like.
