The Sunshine Underground part deux
21 August 2005 :: posted by TravisI know it is a little too early to be writing about The Sunshine Underground again. I’ve been holding off a couple days… but I can’t wait anymore. I’m probably jumping the gun on this band because really it’s too hard to judge anything from just a handful of songs. Especially when each song sounds totally different than the last. The Sunshine Underground’s sound is all over the place - at times sounding like early Radiohead and at other times channeling The Rapture. I don’t know if such diversity is a sign of talent or if it’s a bad sign that they don’t have their “own” sound. Whatever the case is though, the songs they’re coming out with are some damn good tunes.

“My Army” is off of their self produced EP. It’s a couple notches below “Put You In Your Place”, and is in a totally different direction. But what I like about “My Army” is it’s like five different songs in one. It’s all over the place and it works. “My Army” is full of surprises. Right when you think it sounds like every generic “alternative” song on Top 40 radio the vocals totally drop out and there is the edgiest guitar ever. It’s just waiting there to strike.
“My Army” is available for free on their website, but last time I checked they were having bandwidth issues so download is below.
Listen: The Sunshine Underground - "My Army" (mp3)

their sound is their own sound, they just dont stick to the generalisation and are brave enough to mix and match which results in fantastic music.
