The Rakes

posted by Travis

The Rakes (not to be confused with The Rakes) is another new band out of the UK. Not much info on them. No tragic stories floating around… yet. Their press release describes The Rakes “as one of the most significant London bands to emerge in recent years.” Kinda boring. We’ve heard that one before? Right? I was really hoping for a son of a London bomber. Or a daughter of a revolutionary born in the jungles of Sri Lanka. Or at least a bass player with a horrible smack habit. Oh well… maybe some stories will still emerge.

BUT there is another killer remix by Phones (aka Paul Epworth). He’s taken a song that has a typical (in a good way mind you) indie rock sound and given it an electro twist. No… don’t think disco-punk. There are no annoying cowbells in this mix. This is straight up dance. The original version of “Retreat” is dependant on the guitars driving it forward. Phones remixes it so that the blips and bleeps are dependant on the vocals which weave in and out, back and forth. This remix stirs not so distant memories of The Faint… in fact the vocals at times could be confused with The Faint if the listener didn’t know any better.

The Rakes’ debut Capture/Release comes out August 15th on V2 in the UK. You can pre-order from Amazon or HMV.

But fans in the US don’t worry – The Rakes will be hitting the States this September. Their “Retreat” EP will be coming out October 11th on Dim Mak records with their debut to follow shortly after.

in case you're interested the rakes sing tales of the frustration on white collar young life – getting drunk cos your day in the office has been so bad, drinking late to flirt with the barmaid, waking up with regrets, doing it all again. they are amazing live and the whole album is produced by paul 'phones' epworth and could be his best work.

if you like phones, and the rest of the stuff on this great site, you may well enjoy my radio show. follow the link above or go to http://www.totallyradio.com and look for the future rock 'n' roll show.
